Making Course Material Accessible
The Center for Accessible Resources (CAR) helps faculty make course materials accessible. Incorporating accessible course material helps students with disabilities as well as students of various learning styles.

Accessibility statements for syllabi and other material
Syllabus Access Statement
To appear on every class syllabus and may be posted in department offices or classrooms. Font should be 12 point or larger and easy to read.
Accessibility and Accommodations:
To request assistance or accommodations, contact the Center for Accessible Resources at (541) 463-5150 or AccessibleResources@lanecc.edu.
Please be aware that any accessible tables and chairs in this room should remain available for authorized students who find that standard classroom seating is not usable.
Publication Access Statement
To appear on Lane's major publications or posted information. Font should be Arial 12 point (or larger) and easy to read. Location should be reasonably accessible for that publication.
To request this information in an alternate format please contact the Center for Accessible Resources at (541) 463-5150 or AccessibleResources@lanecc.edu.
Event Access Statement
To appear on all announcements/publications for Lane events or activities (e.g., non-classroom activities, such as performing arts productions, community workshops, special events, field trips, etc.). Font should be Arial 12 point (or larger) and easy to read.
To request accommodations that will facilitate your full participation in this event contact the Center for Accessible Resources at least one week in advance at (541) 463-5150 or AccessibleResources@lanecc.edu.
Incorporating accessibility into course material
The Lane CC Accessibility Quick Guide, provided by the Academic Technology Center (ATC), offers instructions on making a variety of formats (including PDFs, Word Docs, PowerPoints, etc) accessible and how to check accessibility of existing documents.
Captioning
Watch our video tutorial for instructions on how to request video captioning:
All videos or multimedia needs to be captioned and/or transcripts must be provided. Auditory descriptions of what is occurring during the video are always needed.
For assistance with captioning, contact the Academic Technology Center (ATC).
For additional information please see Alternate Formats Faculty Guidelines.
Please see this article on the American with Disabilities Act and Web Accessibility for Video.
Enlargements
If stated in a student's Letter of Accommodation, handouts used during class need to be enlarged to at least 18 pt. font. CAR recommends an Arial font with a minimum 12 pt. size on all standard handouts.
Overheads and slides
Some students require copies of overheads or slides, either prior to class or shortly afterwards. There are several ways this can happen:
- Make printed copies available.
- Make documents available electronically through Moodle or email.
You may contact the Academic Technology Center (ATC) if you need assistance with Moodle at (541) 463-3377 or visit the Academic Technology Center page.
Guidelines for creating helpful materials/courses for students with disabilities:
- Avoid using green or red text.
- Avoid using "all caps" or italics when possible.
- Students using screen readers have difficulty using this technology if text jumps around too much on the page (textboxes, cartoons, thought bubbles, etc.).
- Image tags need to be included on learning materials containing illustrations or graphics.
- Accessibility statements must be included in the syllabus for each course per the LCC College Online Policy and Procedure System.
- Headings, a feature in MS Word, must be used when preparing learning materials. This format is the most effective and provides the highest quality translation for students using screen readers.
See our video on PDF Accessbility Tagging
Reminder: Not all students with disabilities reach out to our office for assistance; therefore, it is important to always follow these guidelines when preparing learning materials for class.
Please see more information for creating accessible classroom materials.
An additional resource is Who's Responsible for Making Online Courses Accessible.
Any materials that are printed, viewed, heard, or used in electronic systems such as Moodle must be made accessible.
