Faculty Newsletter, Weekly Tips and Presentations
Each term the Center for Accessible Resources’ (CAR) newsletter is sent to faculty and each department. Tips are included in the Lane Weekly every week—those have the most timely and pertinent information. If faculty members are concerned they are not receiving CAR emails, please see the Troubleshooting Automated Communications page.
In these regular communications CAR responds to faculty concerns and frequently asked questions. Also, CAR provides in-depth information on working with CAR and students with disabilities. Additionally, CAR staff is available to faculty for consultations on disability related topics. If you have any questions, please contact CAR!

Contest Results
Congratulations to Victoria Koldewyn for winning last weeks drawing. She was able to successfully identify that ADA chairs are identified by faint gold spray paint at the base of the chair. Thank you to everyone who responses and Victoria your prize is on its way!
ADA chairs in offices
Now that you know how to identify an ADA chair please help us locate them! Many chairs have gone missing and some have been located in staff offices. These may have been there for a while, before your tenure or been placed there without knowledge that it was an ADA chair or maliciousness. However, please check your office and if you have one of these chairs contact facilities or CAR to arrange for a replacement. If ADA chairs are found in offices that are not HR placements for employee accommodations they will be removed.
Making Online Coursework Accessible

What is “Alt Text”?
Alt text, or alternative text, is a description of an image on a digital document or website that conveys to screen readers the content of the image. All images used for course material must have alt text. The alt text entered must communicate the relevance of the image to the material; it should not simply be a description of the image. If the image is simply decorative, the alt text should reflect this, but alt text must still be entered. Often alt text is added by right clicking on an image and selecting “format image,” however it varies based on the word processing program or website designer.

Testing agreements
If you have a student with approved accommodations that will be provided by one of CAR's Testing Centers, we understand that the testing agreement may not fit all testing circumstances. If you have alternate testing circumstances such as weekly quizzes that have different exam lengths, please email our testing staff at CARTesting@lanecc.edu and we will be happy to make the necessary arrangements. As a reminder if a student is testing in one of CAR's Testing Centers, while including instructions with a test is helpful, the testing agreement still needs to be filled out. This ensures that we get the answers to all of our questions and opens our processes for the student to schedule their exam in the CAR's Testing Centers.
Alternate Furniture
There may be multiple chairs in a classroom as the number of students with an alternate accommodation may vary by class section. Please don’t move or relocate these chairs. If you notice that you have an ADA chair, please return it to the classroom. If you have any issues, contact CAR (x 5150) instead of Facilities. Find more information about ADA furniture on our faculty webpage.
Identifying Alternate Furniture
Last term we ran a Weekly Tip that taught staff how to identify ADA chairs. If you remember what specific marker and where it is located on ADA chairs email AccessibleResources@lanecc.edu. All correct entries emailed by Friday October 28th by 2:00pm will receive one entry into a prize drawing.

Center For Accessible Resources: Open house!
Please join CAR for an open house Monday, October 17th, 2016 from 2:00-4:00pm. This open house will feature CAR's new space in LCC 19 231, allow for introductions to our many new staff members and a salute to retired advisor Pamela McGilvray. Refreshments will be provided.
Guidelines for Recording Lectures
Students may record any lecture or lab information that might be included on an exam. If a student is eligible for this accommodation, they must sign an each term agreement establishing some reasonable limits related to recording lectures in order to protect student's privacy and faculty intellectual property. This agreement covers when it is not appropriate to record (i.e. when personal information is being shared by classmates) and establishes a time limit for maintaining the audio recording (i.e. for the term). Find more information on the required agreement here.
Moodle Test Accommodations
Students with extended time accommodations may be accommodated directly by the instructor in Moodle by setting a user override. For assistance please visit this knowledgebase article from the Academic Technology Center (ATC) Faculty Support page.

Personal Care Attendants
Note: LCC does not provide personal care attendants or aides to assist students with disabilities in carrying out personal functions or physically navigating campus. Personal Care Attendants (PCAs) are not LCC Staff or students. PCAs may accompany a student if there are specific personal assistance needs and should not participate in the class rather only attend to the personal needs of the student. This is contingent upon faculty approval for an additional, non-student to be in the classroom and is should be considered based on enrollment numbers and classroom space. Questions: contact the Center for Accessible Resources.
Testing Security
CAR takes the security of all tests seriously. Some of our testing security measures are: all tests are held in a secure, locked location, during testing, students are monitored at all times by trained CAR staff, students are separated from their belongings, photo ID is checked prior to the student testing, and if a student is witnessed using unauthorized material, or breaking any other established procedures, an incident report form will be completed and sent to the faculty member to determine consequences. Want to know more about our testing security or procedures? Contact us! Or find more information at: Information for Faculty on Student Accommodations
Unlimited Occupational Opportunities means Unlimited Educational Opportunities
It is important for faculty/staff to know about the availability of courses to students with disabilities, regardless of employment opportunities. CAR provided a presentation during Fall Inservice. See the presentation here. This presentation covered accommodations and resources available for student and staff use to ensure that students with disabilities are not denied access to CTE and academic programs. All faculty/staff are required to receive the training by the Oregon Department of Education.
Open house!

Welcoming Michele Barber!
As part of the Student Affairs re-org, we are happy to announce that Michele Barber has join the CAR team. For the last four years, she has provided personal, academic, retention and career counseling as well as crisis intervention in the Counseling and Advising Center. In addition, she had recently been working with Guided Studies and ABSE students providing them with academic options after their placement testing and teaching Human Relations at Work and College Success courses.
In CAR, Michele will be working with CAR and Title IX students. This allows LCC to have a counselor readily available to provide services to students who experience sexual harassment.
Michele will also be an integral part of developing a cohort group with students with disabilities in addressing retention issues.
Please join us again in welcoming Michele to CAR!

Accessibility statements
Accessibility Statements must be on your syllabi, publications and field trip/event fliers. These statements provide effective methods for communicating information to the college community about the Center for Accessible Resources, accommodations, and access to Lane's campuses, programs, websites, and encourage students and community members to speak up about disability issues without being asked (which can violate their privacy). You can find the College's official accessibility statements in the Accessibility Statements section of our website.
How to Refer Students to CAR
When students have difficulties but it's unclear whether it’s a disability, a faculty member may not assume or directly ask the student if she or he has a disability. However, faculty can discuss the issues of concern with the student and she or he might choose to share disability information. If the student discloses a disability, inform the Center for Accessible Resources (CAR) and direct the student to CAR. If the student does not indicate a disability, give them a list of campus resources and include CAR on the list. Below are some suggestions about discussing this with the student. Focus on observed behavioral symptoms or problems rather than the diagnosis. Tips for Suggesting CAR to Students
