Water Conservation Technician Student Projects
-The Learning Garden Bioswale Reference Guide was created in 2012 by Water Conservation Technician Students, Steven Kukal and Tara Rose, with input from instructor, Sarah Whitney, and Learning Garden Specialist, Julie Sheen. This guide provides information for those interested in learning more about bioswales in general and about the Learning Garden bioswale in particular. The guide also provides instructions for bioswale maintenance.
-Learning Garden Master Planning Project was created by Water Conservation Technician students in 2010.
-Installed 2,500 gallon cister at the Berggrenn Demonstraton Farm.
-Retrofit PE locker room showerheads from a 2.5 gallon per minute flow rate to 1.5 gallons per minute. -Retrofit 88% of old bathroom faucets that used 1.0 to 2.2 gallons of water per minute with aerators that use 0.5 gallons per minute. These retrofits are saving the college 1,107,000 gallons of water and $2945 per year.

-Created signs for PE locker room shower area encouraging people to take shorter showers and save water.
-Conducted research and made proposals that have enabled the college to purchase dual flush and ultra-low flow toilets.
-Created a Water Conservation Floor Plan book which lists all water using fixtures at Lane, flow rates for the fixtures, whether they have been retrofit to save water, and how much water they are saving.
-Created spreadsheet for tracking water use.
-Created a rainwater harvesting system that collects rain from the roof of the Learning Garden greenhouse that is used for Learning Garden irrigation.
-Installed a highly efficient irrigation system at the Learning Garden.
