RESULTS FOR BUILDING 1 STUDENT SERVICES JANUARY ENERGY SAVINGS
February 3, 2015
The results are in! Efforts targeting lighting and equipment plug loads with a "Turn It Off" attitude brought the Building 1 Student Services team within a half percent of their goal to reduce energy use below the 2005 baseline year for the month of January. HOW TO MAKE COMPUTER POWER MANAGEMENT WORK WITH THE "Turn It Off" CAMPAIGN
December 9, 2015
Concerned about your work computer being on in the morning even though you are sure you turned it off? Information Technology (IT) and the Institute for Sustainable Practices (ISP) are on the case of the zombie computer! Here is what IT is doing to protect your computer from harm and waste:

* Lane's IT staff already implements power savings for over 2,000 computers by purchasing Energy Star computer and monitors and setting up all end user machines and/or monitors with integrated power saving features.

* IT is working with the ISP to enhance its capacity to turn computers off after important upgrades are done weekly by waking up computers after working hours to minimize disruption to your computer work during the day. Upgrades include scripts that are remotely deployed to protect against malevolent software such as CryptoLocker.

* IT is looking to further reduce waste by deploying better energy management schemes without interfering in your ability to work. It's trickier than it looks!

* The easy part is in your hands. Simply turning off your computer and monitor after working hours reduces our energy costs per computer by $14 to $41 annually. For over 2,000 computers that a savings that adds up quickly!

TURN IT OFF!
October 28, 2014
Lane's "Turn It Off! Saving Energy saves Everything" Campaign presents five tips for success for you to help Lane take action in the fight against climate change:
1) Give It a Rest - Use the ENERGY STAR power management settings on your computer and monitor so they go into power save mode when not in use. Also use a power strip as a central "turn off" point when you are using equipment to completely disconnect the power supply.
2) Unplug It - Unplug electronics such as cell phones and laptops once they are charged. Adapters plugged into outlets use energy even if they are not charging.
3) Light Up Your Work Life - Replace the light bulb in your desk lamp with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb. It will last up to 10 times longer and use about 75 percent less energy. Turn off the lights when you leave, especially at the end of the day.
4) Let It Flow - Keep air vents clear of paper, files, and office supplies. It takes as much as 25 percent more energy to pump air into the workspace if the vents are blocked.
5) Team up and get your office Green certified! - Learn more at www.lanecc.edu/sustainability/green-office-program Create a Green Team with your co-workers, help build support for energy efficiency in your workplace, and reduce office waste. Set a goal to make your building an ENERGY STAR qualified building.

TRANSPORTATION SURVEY INDICATES EMPLOYEE AND STUDENT COMMUTING IS MORE CLIMATE-FRIENDLY THAN PREVIOUSLY ESTIMATED
July 8, 2014
The results of Lane's 2014 Transportation Survey are in. You may be surprised to learn that 29% of respondents ride the bus, 7% carpool, 4% bicycle, and 58% drive alone. This data will result in a decrease of our estimated carbon footprint because Lane previously estimated that about 80% of commuters drive alone. The survey results also provided information as to what programs or incentives will better encourage Lane commuters to choose more climate-friendly modes. The most popular program is the bus pass, followed by safe bicycle/pedestrian routes. Based on the survey results, Lane's Commuter Emissions Task Force will be developing recommendations for how to further reduce emissions from commuting. Click here to view survey results.  Thank you to all employees and students who took the survey. $20 gift cards to the Titan Store were awarded to randomly-selected respondents.

CLIMATE ACTION AND EDUCATION FORUM - VIDEOS, Q&A, AND MORE
May 20, 2014
On Friday, May 9, 2014, the Institute for Sustainable Practices hosted a Climate Action and Education Forum that included presentations by three experts who each have a unique perspective about solutions to climate change. Environmental scientist Paul Ruscher, Ph.D., demystified climate science by debunking the top 10 climate myths; Russ Pierson, DMin, Global Leadership, discussed the social impacts of climate change; and psychologist and author, Don Schneider, Ph.D., presented concrete tools for positively influencing climate skeptics so that we can all be done with the senseless bickering and begin focusing on the vastly more important work of mitigation and adaptation.

Links to the videos of the forum, presenters powerpoint presentations, and written answers to questions posed during the forum are provided here.
