Medical assistants are multi-skilled health professionals specifically educated to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties. The practice of medical assisting directly influences the public's health and well-being, and requires a master of complex body of knowledge and specialized skills requiring both formal education and practical experience that serve as standards for entry into the profession.

The Medical Assistant Program at Lane Community College is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP),(www.caahep.org); 25400 US Highway 19 North, Suite 158, Clearwater, FL 33763, 727-210-2350 upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). The next re-accreditation review and evaluation will occur in the 2015-2016 academic year.

Graduates of this program are eligible to take the national certification examination

(CMA), sponsored by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME). Only individuals who hold a certificate from a medical assisting program accredited by CAAHEP are eligible to take the Certification Examination. Certification is not currently required for initial employment by local employers, but is becoming highly recommended within the local medical community.  Medical Assistant students at Lane should be planning for certification. Upon passing the Certification Examination, an MOA may claim the credential of CMA (AAMA) for Certified Medical Assistant.

Medical Office Assisting is a rapidly expanding segment of the work force. According to the United States Bureau of Labor statistics, Medical Assisting is projected to be one of the fastest growing professions.  The following are statistics for the Lane Community College (LCC) MA program:

• Medical Assistant program at LCC has a job placement rate of 80% over the past five years. 
• Graduates of the MA program at LCC are satisfied with the education they receive at LCC.  As there is an average of 100% satisfaction rate over the past five years.

To Our Students: Please be informed that Lane Community College Division of Health Professions requires all students to submit appropriate personal information (such as immunization records, federal and state background checks, drug screens and others) to CastleBranch, a company specializing in the collection and storage of student health care information. Submission of required documents must be accomplished prior to the beginning of classes. Both the drug screens and background checks must be clear (e.g. absence of positive results for narcotics, marijuana, alcohol and/or other illicit substances for drug screen) to ensure clinical placements and graduation from Health Profession programs. Specifics on required documents, costs, timelines, and how to access CastleBranch, will be included in the letter of program acceptance and/or discussed at the Mandatory Program Orientation.

Dear Students:
Please be aware that you will be required to have a minimum 2.0 gpa at the time of graduation in order to graduate and receive your certificate or associate's degree from LCC. Please also be aware that only LCC courses count toward your final gpa.
