Here's an alphabetical directory of topics and resources related to using tech at Lane.
- AskLane
- AskLane is a good tool to try when you can't find an answer to a question about Lane. It's a searchable database of answers to commonly asked questions about Lane Community College.
- If you don't find the answer you need, email your question to AskLane@lanecc.edu.
- The Lane site search tool can also help you find a specific department or other information.
- Assign/Drop Novell file server
- Some departments use a computer network file server system to allow students to access assignment documents and files, or to upload/submit completed assignments.
- In a class using this file server system your instructor will assign you a log in name and password/PIN to allow you access to the system and to upload or download files.
- Accessible technology for people with disabilities - Center for Accessible Resources
- Assistive technology is any object or device that aids a person with a disability.
- If you have a documented disability, Center for Accessible Resources may be able to help you.

- Blogging
- A blog is a a website containing a writer's or group of writers' own experiences, observations, opinions, etc., and often having images and links to other websites.
- Blogs are used in a variety of Lane courses to give students an alternate mode of communicating their ideas. Blogs are also used by many Lane departments to provide news and information.
- Lane Community College Blog Network - a listing of current department and faculty blogs
- Free blogging sites are available, including the following commonly-used sites:
- Browser optimization, plug-ins
- Browser check for Moodle (checks for browser and plug-in capability for using Moodle)
- Working online with Moodle and other course technologies requires that you have an up to date version of the Firefox or Chrome browsers, with appropriate plug-ins and browser settings.
- Students may find that older computers sometimes are not capable of running the most current version of the Windows operating system or the Mac OS, which in turn may make it impossible to install and use the most current version of Firefox or Chrome. They may then encounter problems using Moodle or other online learning systems.
- Download Firefox or Chrome from the site links below. Visiting these sites will also tell whether you have the latest version of the browser installed.

- User your myLane password to log in to a computer in any campus computer lab.
- If your myLane password does not work, lab assistants have generic log in capability to help you log in.

- Digital citizenship
- Being a good digital citizen means, among other things, that you should be aware that your computer-based and especially online information is likely to be public, everything you do online is public, and that you will be held accountable for any action you take.
- It is vitally important to respect/educate/protect yourself and others in the digital universe. More information on digital citizenship is at digitalcitizenship.net.

- Email
- Lane doesn't provide student email accounts.
- There are many free email options such as Yahoo and Google Gmail, all of which provide you with a web-based account interface that you can access from any computer connected to the internet.
- You need your own email account to register at Lane. Don't use a friend's or parent's email account since you will need your own account to receive important email from the college.
- Keep your current email address updated at myLane to make sure you can always receive messages from Lane and from your instructors, including through Moodle.

- Enrolling at Lane
- Enrolling first requires that you have an email account. Get a free personal email account at Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc.
- Steps to enroll: the page at this link will guide you through the enrollment process, whether you are a first-time college student, a prior college student, a re-enrolling student or a College Now high school student. You'll also find links for Academic Advising, New Student Resources and myLane.
- Enrolling requires you complete an online application form.
- You may also apply for financial aid using an online form.When your enrollment process is complete you'll receive your student L number for logging in to myLane.
- Enrollment and Student Financial Services is the web site where you find everything related to enrolling, paying your bill and so much more. SHeD Knowledgebase information on the(New Sudent Information Session and New Student Academic Advising:

- Summarizes what Lane computer users need to know about the laws, College policies, and guidelines that affect computer use.
- Provides examples of inappropriate behavior and describing the consequences for violators.
- LaneTV
- Lane-TV is a 24-hour cable TV station offering a variety of live and pre-recorded educational programming.
- Learning systems software used in Lane courses
- Many Lane academic department areas have courses that use lab-based or online learning systems software.
- Many courses that use learning systems software offer lab-based instruction in using these types of software. Check with your instructor for the availability of tutoring.
- There are many products used across Lane courses, for example the McGraw-Hill (textbook publisher) products which include Connect and SIMnet.
- Moodle is a learning management system used by most Lane courses to organize and deliver content, which may include other learning systems software also. The SHeD offers help using Moodle and also has an open-enrollment non-credit course that uses Moodle to teach Moodle. See Moodle in this directory for more information.

- Moodle
- The SHeD can answer all of your questions on using Moodle. Call them, email them or drop by.
- Moodle is a web site that provides Lane's LMS (learning management system) technology.
- To log in to Moodle use your L number and the same password you use for myLane.
- After you log in to Moodle you'll see a list of your current classes to work in.
- Moodle is used for:
- General course delivery and management.
- Providing the syllabus and other course documents.
- Displaying a week-by-week class schedule.
- Giving quizzes and exams and other assignments.
- Moodle Help for Students is a Lane course offered in Moodle to teach you how to use Moodle.
- Moodle FAQ (frequently asked questions) from the Moodle organization.
- Moodle Student Orientations are offered periodically during the year.

- myLane
- myLane is your home base for all your personal accounts and information at Lane. You'll find an icon link for myLane at the bottom right of every Lane web page.
- You log in (sign in to access your account) to MyLane for the first time using your student L number and temporary password (provided to you after enrolling at Lane). The myLane system will ask you to create a new password when you log in for the first time.
- When you first log in to myLane you'll also be prompted with a message to first complete the New Student Information Session, a brief guide to going to school at Lane.When you have completed the New Student Information Session you'll be able to register for classes-click the myEnrollment tab in myLane to add or drop classes, get class book lists, print a class schedule and much more.

- LaneDrive (and other free options for storing your stuff in the cloud)
- Save your work online (in the cloud) in the Lane LaneDrive system-a good solution when you don't have a flash drive with you!
- It's available from home, at Lane, or anywhere you have an Internet connection.
- Note: Student files are deleted during the break between terms and students should copy or backup files with removable media.
- Other good options for cloud storage include:
- Google Drive (read about it in the directory above).
- DropBox
- Microsoft OneDrive
- There are lots more, so search online for more options.
- Online classes
- Online classes are classes taken from anywhere in the world you have access to the internet.

- Online classes are offered in almost every department, but require good time management and self-discipine.

- Test proctoring - Information on how to arrange testing in an off-campus location.
- Moodle is the web site where online classes at Lane are administered. See the Moodle entry above for more information.
- Paying Your Bill
- The Enrollment and Student Fincial Services guide to tuition, fees and payments. Includes information on paying your bill at myLane.
- Passwords used at Lane
- Your myLane password is used for myLane, Moodle and campus computer log in.
- Other passwords are used in specialized areas of the Lane system.

- PDFs
- PDF, or Portable Document Format, is a file format used to represent documents independent of application software, computer hardware, and operating system. Each PDF file captures a complete description of a fixed-layout document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it.
- Many instructors and departments make documents available in PDF format to ensure that users can open the document.
- Many PDFs open automatically in your web browser. If it doesn't automatically open, download it and double-click on it to open it.
- All you need to open and view a PDF is Adobe Reader. You probably already have it, since it is a common web browser plug-in. You can download or upgrade Adobe Reader at the Adobe web site.
- Many common applications, like MS Office, make it easy to convert documents to PDF format using the Save As command or Save As PDF command (found in the File menu/tab).
- Printing, copying and scanning
- Limited free printing is available from Library desktop computers and Library laptops.
- Printing is currently not available from personal laptops.

- Registering for courses at myLane
- myLane is your home base for all your personal accounts and information at Lane. You'll find an icon link for myLane at the bottom right of every Lane web page.
- Whether you are a first-time or continuing college student, the Enrollment and Financial Services guide to registering for courses will give you all the information you need.
- If you haven't logged into myLane before, go to myLane and initiate your myLane account using the temporary myLane password sent to you via email, and then you will be prompted to complete the New Student Information Session. The New Student Information Session is a brief guide to going to school at Lane.
- If you are a first-term student at Lane, before you can register for classes you will also have to complete an New Student Academic Advising session (New Student Academic Advising).
- When you have completed the New Student Information Session and New Student Academic Advising you'll be able to register for classes-click the myEnrollment tab in myLane to add or drop classes, get class book lists, print a class schedule and much more.
- Troubleshooting problems with the New Student Information Session and New Student Academic Advising:

- The Lane site search tool is linked both in the upper right corner and in the footer of every Lane web page and can also help you find a specific department or other information. Just type in the key words related to what you want to find.
- AskLane is a searchable database of specific questions and related answers about Lane.
- SHeD - Student Help Desk for 1-on-1 help
- When you can't find the answer to your questions, you can call, email, or drop by the SHeD for help on any technology issue.SHeD assists students with Moodle, myLane, wireless access and other academic technologies.
- Use the SHeD Knowledgebase for answers to commonly asked questions. Just click on the folder with the topic you're interested in. You'll then see a list of topics to choose from!
- Social media
- Lane has Facebook and Twitter accounts for Lane news and events. Look at the bottom right of any Lane page for the Facebook and Twitter icons.
- Lane also has Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube accounts.

- Software registration - proving student status

- Don't have a computer? Come to campus and use a computer!
- Tech assistance is always available, but time with individual students is limited.
- Telecourse viewing options
- Telecourse viewing options include LaneTV, on-campus viewing and more
- Tutoring Services and resource centers with tutors
- Tutoring Services is free and offers a computer lab with technical assistance.
- TRiO Student Support Services also offers tutoring for qualified students.
- The Lane Counseling department can help you with other academic, career and personal needs.
