Hazmat Team
Due to the increase in the perceived threat of terrorism, HAZMAT-handling capabilities has increased throughout the United States, recognizing that flammable, poisonous, explosive, or radioactive substances in particular could be used. Lane Community College has decided to form a Hazmat team that can quickly respond to these incidents to protect Life and Property.
The Lane Community College Hazmat team personnel are specially trained to handle various Hazmat situations. Hazmat includes materials that are radioactive, flammable, explosive, corrosive, oxidizing, asphyxiating, bio hazardous, toxic, pathogenic, or allergenic. Also included are physical conditions such as compressed gases and liquids or hot materials, including all goods containing such materials or chemicals, or may have other characteristics that render them hazardous in specific circumstances.
Goals for the team include monthly meetings for team members, training topics, opportunities to learn skills, and drill activities. These goals also include an annual Team exercise on campus, with support from outside agencies. One of the key objectives of this team is to isolate, identify, and contain incidents with the smallest amount of contamination.
The Hazmat Team will consist of team members from Public Safety and FMP, including Custodial Services. The Chemical Hygiene Officer, various Safety Committee members, and Lane C-CERT members, and other departments within the college are welcome and encouraged to join this partnership as well.
