Event Documents:

Convening of the State held on February 19th, 2016 was a one-day event dedicated to the presentation and discussion of a guided pathways model leading to increased student retention and success in community colleges led by Davis Jenkins a senior research associate at the Community College Research Center, Columbia University.

The innovative research of Davis Jenkins and his co-authors of Redesigning America’s Community Colleges is revolutionizing how a growing number of community colleges and four-year universities help students succeed and improve rates of completion.

The guided pathways model entails a systemic redesign of the student experience beginning at the student's initial connection to college through to completion. The model focuses on presenting courses in the context of highly structured, educationally coherent program maps that align with students’ goals for careers and further education (from CCRC's "What We Know Guide").

Oregon community college teams along with representatives from Oregon universities, K-12, individuals within the education community, and Lane employees convened to discuss challenges, strengths and a path forward to increased student success.

About Davis Jenkins

Davis Jenkins, presenter

Davis Jenkins is a senior research associate at Community College Research Center, which is housed at Teachers College, Columbia University. He works with colleges and states to find ways to improve educational and employment outcomes for students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Jenkins’ research and thinking have informed the development and spread of innovative approaches to improving student outcomes, including career pathways, adult technical bridge programs (such as Washington State’s I-BEST), and Guided Pathways to Success (GPS).

Together with Thomas Bailey and Shanna Jaggars, Davis Jenkins is the author of the new book, Redesigning America’s Community Colleges: A Clearer Path to Student Success (Harvard University Press, 2015), which synthesizes key findings from CCRC’s research on strategies for improving student completion and learning.

He is currently leading research projects aimed at improving the effectiveness of 2- and 4-year institutions in enabling community college transfer students to earn college degrees and on identifying strategies for helping students enter a program of study suited to their interests and aspirations.

Jenkins holds a Ph.D. in public policy analysis from Carnegie Mellon University and a BA from Princeton University.
