December 6: International Human Rights Day, Ajamu Baraka keynote speaker, nationally known human rights defender, educator and leader, and speakers on local concerns on topics such as integrating immigrants, homelessness, and marriage equity. Presented by City of Eugene Equity and Human Rights Center, City of Eugene Human Rights Commission, and Community Coalition for the Advancement of Human Rights. November 1-13: 11th Annual Oregon Students of Color Conference (OSCC), Lane Main Campus, Eugene. The northwest's best student-led educational and networking opportunity. Over 70 workshops with presenters from across the Pacific Northwest, and three keynote speakers. Registration: $60.

November 4: Conservative Revolutionary: How Branch Rickey's Signing of Jackie Robinson Jump Started the Modern American Civil Rights Movement, by Lee Lowenfish, 6:00pm, Downtown Eugene Public Library, 10th Avenue and Olive Street.

November 3-5: Arts & Humanities, Toward a Flourishing State (Providence, Rhode Island) The conference focuses attention on innovative and practical approaches to the arts and humanities as integral to liberal education. Participants will explore ways in which campuses and classrooms are addressingthe well-being of the arts and humanities and connecting them with other disciplines, professional fields, and the common good of communities, from local to global. November 3 cancelled: Oregon Diversity Institute (ODI) Seventeenth Annual Conference (Eugene, Oregon) University of Oregon campus.

November 3: 25Live Scheduling System Class The 25Live software was updated to version 18 just prior to the start of Fall term. Many new features added new functionality in event management, searching, and reporting. Learn how to schedule staff meetings, equipment for a class or event, or even a motor pool car! This hands-on class will be held in ATC Building 19, Room 121.

November 7 and 9: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Training (HE261). Lyndell Wilken, Instructor. 3:00-4:50pm, Lane Main Campus, Building 5 (Physical Education), Room 125. Principles and procedures to provide basic life support to victims of airway obstruction, respiratory and cardiac distress, and or arrest. Meets National Safety Council and OSHA and American Red Cross standards for certification of adult, child, and infant CPR. Students receive Community CPR and AED certification, adult, child, and infant.

November 10: The Renaissance of Chinese Culture and Its Global Impact, Xiaoyana Wang with the Shen Yun Performing Arts (Eugene, Oregon) Lane main campus, Building 03, Room 216 Boardroom. Ms. Xiaoyang Wang grew up in China and is currently the president of Oregon Falun Dafa Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting traditional Chinese culture and sharing it with local communities. Two lectures, 10:00-11:00am and 1:00-2:00pm.

November 10: Hiring for Cultural Competence Workshop: Practical Methods and Strategies to Get What You Need, Lane Main Campus, 9am-11:30am, CML Room 225. Workshop designed to provide participants from LCC with practical methods and strategies to assess the cultural competence of candidates for positions at Lane. Each method or strategy can be adapted as appropriate for the particular position in question: designing curricula and teaching in the classroom, serving students and otehrs in an office, or working to maintain services throughout the larger campus. Participants will learn practical

November 11-13: Oregon Students of Color Conference (OSCC) (Eugene, Oregon) OSCC is the northwest's best student-led educational and networking opportunity. This year's conference will feature over 70 workshops with presenters from across the Pacific Northwest, and three keynote speakers. Early bird registration is $50 with an October 25 deadline; late registration increases to $60.

November 15: Honoring Elders: American Indian Cultural Traditions. Facilitated by Nick Sixkiller, Education Specialist for the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Tribe of Oklahoma. LCC Longhouse, 2:00-3:30 pm. Celebrate the rich and varied legacy of Native American peoples of our region. Discover how the nine confederated tribes of Oregon maintain their cultures while living in the modern world. Learn the importance of elders to all tribes, as those who nourish the young with their wisdom. Free and open to the public.

November 15: Sexual Assault Prevention and Response, 4:00-5:30. LCC Main Campus, Building 3, Room 216 (Boardroom). Resources and information on preventing sexual violence. Issues discussed to include date rape drugs, acquaintance rape, stalking, legal orders, sexual assault response, and Lane Public Safety's response to reported incidents. Facilitated by Public Safety.

November 16: Understanding the Aging Process, What's Normal and What's Not We need to better understand the aging process and what is normal and what is not. This session explores those differences and identifies what can be done in the event there is a concern. Join the Aging Parents Support Group for this presentation by Donna Peterson, Gerontologist, from 12 - 1 p.m. in Building 4, Room 254.

November 17: Self-Defense Class, 4:00-6:00pm. LCC Main Campus, Building 19, Room 243. Students will be provided with tips and strategies to avoid becoming the victim of a crime and receive helpful information on protecting themselves. Instruction will be hands on and participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for limited athletic activity. Facilitated by Public Safety.

November 17 and 18: American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) Annual Fall Conference and 25th Anniversary Celebration - Honoring Our Past, Shaping Our Future (Tigard, Oregon) Keynotes by LCC President Mary Spilde and Shelley Moon, poet, playwright, performer and social change activist. Early bird, reduced registration rate through October 31.

November 18: Aspiring Leaders Training Program Seminar: Collaborative Leadership and Problem Solving (part 1) 1:00-5:00 pm, CML 205

November 19: Juventud FACETA Graduation, 6:00pm, Amigos MSC, 21 North Grand Avenue, Eugene. This will be a night of celebration and pride honoring youth and their achievements. RSVP by 5:00pm, November 15.

November 21: Oregon, a Peculiar Paradise: The Life, Times, and Trials of Being Black in Oregon, Henry Luvert, President of the Eugene NAACP. Monday, 2:00-3:30pm, Lane Boardroom (Building 3, Room 216). A history of Oregon's race attitude toward African American mother and other communities and what impacts this has had on the state of Oregon today. How much Jim Crow and the KKK influenced the laws of Oregon, and how it affected the population of African Americans in the state of Oregon. Who was Joseph Lane, and why do we care? Remove racist language from Oregon law, or keep it? These and many other questions will bediscussed and explored.

November 28: Weaving Words. . . A Community Weaving Project Where Individuals are Woven Together, with Susan Pavel, artist of Coast Salish weaving. Lane is honored to be one of the cosponsors of the Weaving Words Project being held on Monday afternoons during November and December at the UO Many Nations Longhouse and the Lane Longhouse. The entire community is invited to participate. Pavel is the featured artist for the exhibit titled: AQ3Tsya'yay: Weaver's Spirit Power at the UO Museum of Natural and Cultural History. The completed community blanket will be represented as a whole where strands of yarn and individuals are woven together, and will be gifted at Potlach and Giveaway on January 13. October 13: Tea & Topics: Teach Like a Champion

October 13: Visiting Scholars in Islam lecture series in the Center for Meeting & Learning beginning at 5:30 PM. The lecture titled American Muslim Women, Religious Authority, and Activism: More Than a Prayer, presented by Juliane Hammer will cover women's religious authority, the negotiation of gender norms, innovative approaches to interpreting the Qur'an, and the particular dynamics of American Muslim communities. It also addresses issues of women's roles in society, women's religious leadership, and the dynamics of mediarepresentations. Juliane Hammer is assistant professor and Kenan Rifai Fellow in Islamic Studies at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She holds an MA and PhD in Islamic Studies from Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany, and specializes in the study of American Muslims, contemporary Muslim thought, women and gender in Islam, and Sufism.

October 14: Lane Community College Sustainability Conference, 8:30am-4:00pm, Lane Main Campus, CML 102 and 103. Keynotes include Dr. Debra Rowe from 9:15-10:00am, "Making the Commitment to Sustainability More Real: Covering the Bases", and will host a facilitated conversation directly following her presentation until noon; and Bill Bradbury will speak on "Global Warming Comes Home" from 12:45pm-2:00pm.

October 24-26: Improving Customer Service with a One-Stop Enrollment Model Conference (Chicago, Illinois) The event focuses on learning how to create a customer service friendly, one-stop model on your campus through exploring the various challenges and solutions to building a successful model to improve student service and support. October 25: The Impact of U.S. Drone Use and Foreign Policy on the Internal Politics, Culture, and Religious Dynamics Inside Pakistan, with Dr. Anita Weiss, Professor and Head of the Department of International Studies at the U of O (Eugene, Oregon) 1:00pm-2:50pm, CML. This lecture is sponsored by Lane's Initiative on Islam and Other Religions, and it is open to the entire LCC community of students and staff.
