Poetry Reading at Tsunami Books
Honors students and faculty will meet at Tsunami Books to attend a poetry reading celebrating the 30th anniversary of John Haislip's book, Seal Rock. Lane faculty will be among the people reading poems from this book. Seal Rock received the first Oregon Book Award for Poetry in 1987. Free copies of the book will be given to students at the Orientation and Welcome Back Gathering.

Spring Symposium
Join us Thursday, June 5, for the Honors Spring Symposium. This is the culmination of research conducted in the Honors Capstone Seminar. The symposium will feature student presentations and invited speakers addressing implications of the rising cost of education for single parents and the gender inequality in STEM graduate programs and careers.

A2-B-C Film Screening and Q&A Skype Session with Ian Thomas Ash, Film Director
Mr. Ash resides in Japan and was able to document the earthquake and tidal wave damage to the Fukushima reactors. He has been filmed the stories of families and children who have developed thyroid cysts following the release of radiation. He pays tributes to the mothers of these children who broke the silence to speak up about the health of their children and confront medical, educational and government officials.
Attendees gained a deeper level of understanding regarding critical and global health issues, science, and government transparency. After the film screening and Q&A session, attendees had the opportunity to record messages for the mothers and families in this film for Ian to share with them.

Honors Spring Symposium
This annual event was the culmination of research conducted by honors students in the Capstone Seminar, which explored the impact of food choices and agricultural practices through student panel discussions and presentations. It also featured a key note address by Stan Taylor and was followed by a reception in the CML's David Joyce Gallery.

Dead Man Walking Opera Performance
15 honors students had the opportunity to attend the Dead Man Walking opera, which was featured as one of many community events focusing on the theme of Prisons, Compassion and Peace.

"The Last Supper" Art Exhibit
As part of the Dead Man Walking community event series, the honors community attended this artist talk hosted at U of O's Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. Artist Julie Green shared with guests about her exhibit of painted porcelain plates that illustrate the final meal requests of death row inmates.

Steve Shankman and Dead Man Walking Presentation
Those who attended Steve Shankman's presentation on the Dead Man Walking events walked away inspired and transformed by his vision. Steve is the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) Chair in Transcultural Studies, Interreligious Dialogue, and Peace at the University of Oregon. Watch a documentary video (about ten minutes long) about the Inside Out classes that Steve teaches through the U of O Clark Honors College. The classes are held in Oregon prisons and are comprised of prison inmates and honors students.

Honors E-Portfolio Showcase
The students in Fall 2012's LIB 199_H Invitation to Inquiry Seminar worked with Kevin Steeves, Jen Klaudinyi, and Ce Rosenow to create ePortfolios that will showcase their best work to prospective employers and four-year universities. Their portfolios will serve as models for other students as the college continues to think about the role ePortfolios may play here at Lane.

Art exhibit "Psyche" by JS Bird
JS Bird, an art instructor at Lane and member of the Lane Honors Program Leadership Team, presented his art exhibit "Psyche," which showcases the work he produced on a recent sabbatical with the theme of exploring the myth of Psyche and Eros through iconographic female images of pop culture.

The Lane Honors Program congratulates Catherine Mullins on the publication of "As You Read It: From 'Nazi-Hippie' to Catholic Literary Scholar, Joseph Pearce Discusses a Unique Career." Catherine originally wrote this piece for her scholar biography assignment in the Fall 2012 Honors Invitation to Inquiry Seminar. Catherine's scholar biography of Joseph Pearce appears in the St. Austin Review.

Honors Program Spring Health & Wellness Symposium
The Lane Honors Program concludes its inaugural year having offered a range of exciting honors courses and events to Lane students. The Honors Program Spring Health & Wellness Symposium exemplifies the program's mission to provide students with a transformative learning experience centered on scholarly inquiry, academic rigor and intellectual growth. As a culmination of their research, the students in the Honors Invitation to Inquiry Seminar engaged in a dynamic dialogue with eight guest panelists about two important topics: student healthcare issues and Lane's decision to "Take Back The Tap." The event concluded with the unveiling of a poster-sized map designed in collaboration with Lane graphic design students which depicts water bottle-filling station locations across campus. We look forward to the creativity, civic engagement and campus-wide involvement that our growing honors student population will bring to Lane Community College!

Bill Ayers Lecture & Dialogue: "Teaching & Learning: the Personal & Political"
Honors students participated in a lecture and informal dialogue with Bill Ayers that addressed the major themes of his work: Democracy, Education Reform, and Civic Engagement.
Professor Ayers is a devoted teacher and scholar as well as the founder of both the Small Schools Workshop and the Center for Youth and Society, and has taught courses in interpretive and qualitative research, urban school change, and teaching and the modern predicament. Ayers has written extensively about social justice, democracy and education, the cultural contexts of schooling, and teaching as an essentially intellectual, ethical, and political enterprise.

Lane honors students Amber Snell and David Guajardo teamed up with Honors Program Coordinators Ce Rosenow and Jen Hare to host an Honors Program table at Lane Preview Night. Plenty of interaction with prospective honors students and their parents and even a guest appearance by Ty the Titan made the night exceptionally fun!

Lane honors students participated in this International Programs-sponsored event which featured an international student discussion panel on Islam and a gourmet banquet of Middle Eastern cuisine prepared by guest chef Ibrahim Hamide, the owner of local restaurants Cafe Soriah, Zenon and Casablanca.

Northwest Stone Invitational Artist Reception
Lane honors students gathered a group to attend the artist reception for the exhibit titled "Northwest Stone Invitational," which featured regional artists showcasing contemporary stonework. Ellis Goldberg Lecture + Honors Program Fall Reception
Lane honors students participated in the Islam Lecture Series by gathering as a group to hear Ellis Goldberg's presentation titled "Egyptian Spring: Desperately Seeking Revolution." During the reception that followed they mingled with other lecture participants and got a chance to savor Mediterranean hors d'oeuvres and engage with the guest lecturer in an informal dialogue about his experience living in Egypt during the revolution and his understanding of politics in the Middle East.

Commit to Complete
The Honors Program hosted a table as part of Lane's Commit to Complete event sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. In addition to singing a pledge to complete their college certificate, 2-year degree or transfer plan, students got the opportunity to talk with representatives from U of O, OSU, Phi Theta Kappa and the Lane Honors Program.

Reading Together: Barry Lopez
Through the generosity of LCC Patron Jane Stevens King, the Reading Together project hosted nationally recognized essayist fiction writer Barry Lopez for a campus visit on October 6 and 7. Lopez presented a public reading on Thursday evening, October 6, at 7:30 pm at the Center for Meeting and Learning. On Friday, October 7, he met with students for an informal Q&A and luncheon.
Lopez's visit kicked off the Reading Together calendar of events for 2011-12, focusing on the year's RT book selection Vintage Lopez (2004), a collection of both short fiction and non-fiction essays that should appeal to a wide range of discipline interests. During Spring term 2012, the Reading Together project will host a college-wide exhibition to showcase the student work produced over the course of the year in response to Lopez's writing.
