Diversity Plan

Diversity Plan

In 1995, the Lane Western Interstate Commission on Higher Education (WICHE) committee, comprised of 30 Lane students, staff and community representatives, developed and adopted a Lane Diversity Plan.  A Diversity Team was created to ensure implementation of the plan as well as to expand the area of diversity concerns to be addressed by the college. The 1995 Diversity Plan primarily focused on four racial/ethnic groups and women.

In 2004, as part of Lane's new college governance system, a Diversity Council was created, replacing the Diversity Team.  One of its tasks as outlined in its charter was to develop and update the campus diversity plan. During 2009-10, the Diversity Council reviewed and revised the former plan developing a new, five year, comprehensive diversity plan for the college for 2010 through 2015. The expanded and updated 2010 - 2015 Diversity Plan includes additional areas such as age, language, cultural competency, disabilities, social class, sexual orientation and religious diversity.  It presents a vision for diversity at Lane and incorporates best practices in the area of diversity strategic planning.

Lane's Diversity plan has a social justice framework guiding diversity efforts so that issues of privilege, oppression and discrimination are recognized and addressed. An essential part of the vision is that diversity change should be inclusive in nature, and not exclusive. Additionally, diversity should be everyone's responsibility and all staff should have the capacity to create educational and work environments that are safe and respectful.

In 2010, the Diversity Council also developed a Diversity Strategic Direction with specific goals and an implementation plan, which incorporated the college's Diversity Strategic Direction and items from the 2010-2015 Diversity Plan.
