Become a Tutor

How you can become a Volunteer Tutor

Do you enjoy helping people learn? Are you responsible and self-motivated?

Volunteer Literacy Tutors are needed in the following programs and subjects:

  • English as a Second Language
  • GED Preparation
  • Reading, Writing, Math & Computer skills

You can gain skills in teaching, while helping people in your community improve their lives.

Please consider joining us on this adventure by following these three steps:

Step 1. Attend the New Tutor Orientation

Program orientation takes place at the Lane Community College Downtown Campus.  This is NOT the same thing as training, and usually takes 30 minutes.  Subjects to be discussed are: tutor training, program registration, student/tutor placement, and commitment.  Please call (541) 463-6184 to make an appointment for your orientation session.

Location:
Lane Community College, Downtown Campus (DCA)
101 W 10th Ave, Room 202

After you have attended the orientation session, you will need to submit The Online Volunteer Tutor Contact Form:

The Online Volunteer Tutor Contact Form

The orientation will provide some information that is necessary for completing the form. Please do not submit the form prior to our meeting.

Step 2. Complete the Tutor Training course, Effective Tutoring

This is a free 12 hour class. The class meets two days a week, for three weeks each term. (The terms are Fall, Winter, and Spring.) You will get the exact date/time/location information when you attend the New Tutor Orientation.

Topics covered in the workshop include:

  • Adult Learning Theory
  • Cultural Differences
  • Tutoring techniques for Basic Skills and ESL
  • Assessment
  • Lesson Planning
  • Study Skills

People with equivalent educational background and experience may be allowed to waive the training.
