2008 Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE)

  • CCSSE Overview- Reports in this section provide a general understanding of findings from the 2008 CCSSE. Information includes an examination of participating colleges and consortia, comparisons between CCSSE institutions and all public community colleges, a review of selected findings, and information on understanding results.
    • CCSSE Survey Instrument -the survey instrument students completed in randomly selected credit classes.

    • Colleges Participating in CCSSE and Comparison Groups
      • Main Overview - this report has four key sections and provides a general understanding of findings from the 2008 CCSSE Cohort. First, 2008 CCSSE Cohort colleges and student respondents are highlighted as well as data concerning the 2008 CCSSE Consortia. Second, CCSSE institutions and their students are compared to all U.S. public community colleges. In the third section, selected findings are showcased. In the fourth section, information is provided to help college leaders understand and use their CCSSE results.
      • Comparison Groups by Size - lists participating colleges including Lane and other large community colleges.
      • CCSSE Consortia - lists the 2008 CCSSE consortia, including Oregon's consortium of community colleges and the colleges that comprise each.
  • Summary of Findings- Reports in this section provide item-by-item mean scores for the CCSSE Benchmarks and for each of the items that makes up the Benchmarks. Lane's scores are compared with other large colleges, other Oregon Consortium Colleges, and all CCSSE 2008 participants.
    • CCSSE 2008 Codebook - this file contains the CCSSE data dictionary and includes information on the structure, contents, and layout of the CCSSE dataset in reports posted in the "Summary of Findings" and "Detail Findings" sections.  Specifically, the codebook includes variable names associated with items, information about response values for those variables, and codes used to indicate missing data or invalid responses.
    • Description of Benchmarks Reports - provides a brief description of the data layout of the following two reports.
    • Benchmarks for Large Colleges Including Lane - includes a Summary Table of scores for all students on each of the five CCSSE benchmarks for Lane, other Large Colleges, and the 2008 CCSSE Cohort; a CCSSE Benchmark Deciles Report, and Bar Charts and Benchmark Item Composition are also included.
    • Benchmarks for Oregon Consortium and Lane - includes a Summary Table of scores for all students on each of the five CCSSE benchmarks for Lane, the Oregon Consortium of Community Colleges, and the 2008 CCSSE Cohort; a CCSSE Benchmark Deciles Report, and Bar Charts and Benchmark Item Composition are also included.
  • Detail Findings- Reports in this section summarize the counts and percentages for each item on The Community College Student Report.  Data are presented for all, part-time, and full-time students at Lane, other Large Colleges, the Oregon Consortium of Community Colleges, and all CCSSE 2008 participants.
    • First Look
      • Description - provides a brief description of the findings reported in the following two "First Look" reports. Those reports highlight survey items where Lane's mean scores are notably above or below the mean scores of Large Colleges and the Oregon Consortium of Community Colleges.
      • Scores Above and Below Mean - Lane & Large Colleges - highlights survey items where Lane's mean scores are notably above or below the mean scores of other Large Colleges.
      • Scores Above and Below Mean - Lane & Oregon Consortium - highlights survey items where Lane's mean scores are notably above or below the mean scores of other Oregon Consortium of Community Colleges.
    • Means Summary
      • Description - provides a brief description of the findings of the data reported in the following two "Means Summary" reports.
      • Report of Lane & Other Large Colleges - presents item-by-item mean scores for all students, for students by enrollment status (part-and full-time), for Lane students and for students from other Large Colleges.
      • Report of Lane & Other Oregon Consortium - presents item-by-item mean scores for all students, for students by enrollment status (part-and full-time), for Lane students and for students from other Oregon Consortium Community Colleges.
    • Response Frequencies
      • Description - provides a brief description of the findings of the data reported in the following three "Response Frequencies" reports.
      • CCSSE Cohort Frequencies - provides item-by-item percentage responses for the entire 2008 CCSSE Cohort.
      • Lane Frequencies Compared to Large Colleges - response counts and percentages for all questions – comparing Lane, other large colleges, and the entire 2008 CCSSE cohort broken out by: all students, part-time students, and full-time students.
      • Lane Frequencies Compared to Oregon Consortium Colleges - response counts and percentages for all questions – comparing Lane, other Oregon Consortium colleges, and the entire 2008 CCSSE cohort broken out by: all students, part-time students, and full-time students.
      • Response Frequencies for Additional Questions used by Oregon Community College Consortium -  summarizes the observed response frequencies (counts and percentages) for the Oregon Community College Consortium's additional questions.  Data are presented for all, part-time, and full-time students at Lane compared to all responses from the Oregon Consortium. These data are available because Lane collaborated with 13 other Oregon Community Colleges and chose to add 15 specific additional questions to the survey.
