Professional Development Calendar - 2013
April 2013
April 23, Tuesday (4:15 pm): Ni Ketut Arini, Bali revered teacher, performer, and expert on classifical and modern Balinese dance will be sharing her story in Lane's Blue Door Theatre located in the lower level of the Performing Arts building (Building 6) on the main campus. This is a free event.
Ibu Arini, as she is universally known, is famous throughout Bali for several reasons. As a performer, her riveting interpretations of formative kebyar-style works such as Taruna Jaya ("Dance of the Victorious Youth") and Margapati ("King of the Forest") won her top prizes and widespread recognition in the first years of the Bali Arts Festival. She also became a skilled performer in various classical styles, such as legong and arja. As a choreographer, she created several dramatic works based on Balinese mythology and folklore, such as the award-winning Legong Subraba Duta. But even beyond these achievements, Ibu Arini is one of the most highly regarded teachers in Bali—an artist whose unquestioned mastery of dance, passionate love of her art, and gentle spirit has made her a guiding light to thousands of dancers and other artists throughout Bali. She appears frequently on Balinese television in demonstrations and explanations of various dance styles, as an articulate spokesperson for one of the world's richest dance traditions. Ms. Arini holds a Masters Degree in dance from ISI, the Indonesian Academy of Dance in Jogjakarta, Java and has taught and performed internationally, including tours and/or residencies in Taiwan, Malaysia, Japan, Europe, and the United States.
