Event: Salgado Maranhão and Alexis Levitin, Poetry and Stories
Tuesday, April 19, 2016 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM - Center for Meeting and Learning, Room 103
Salgado Maranhão is the best known poet of his generation in Brazil. He and Alexis Levitin, translator of Maranhão's poetry and stories from Portuguese, will be featured at Lane. The Cultural Competency Professional Development Committee and the Lane Honors Program are co-sponsoring the event.
Maranhão's bilingual collection Blood of the Sun (Milkweed Editions) was published in 2012. His second book Tiger Fur (Pine Press) was published Fall 2015. Maranhão may be of special interest as an Afro-Brazilian success story, having risen from rural impoverishment to the peak of poetic achievement in his country. He is well-known for his song lyrics and recordings with Brazil's leading jazz and pop musicians.
Both Blood of the Sun and Tiger Fur will be available for purchase at the event.
