A recent article in "The Chronicle of Higher Education" was entitled "What not to say in class during an election season" (September 19, 2008). In it the author described classroom situations involving political issues that can be challenging for faculty, one example being what do you do when a student asks for your political beliefs? In this workshop we will discuss this and related situations and explore what faculty can do to handle these potentially loaded issues in a way that is productive and fair to all students. The Art of Facilitation -- Thursdays, October 9, 16, 23, 30

What does it mean to be a Facilitator? According to Webster's Dictionary, "facilitate" means to make easier or less difficult. However, if you are not equipped with the correct tools to facilitate, it becomes more difficult to achieve the desired results. This three day workshop will teach you how to master the art of facilitating meetings, planning sessions, public forums, focus groups and task force meetings. Learn insights into how to make it easier for groups to define standards, agree on a vision, make decisions, take action and be accountable for outcomes and assignments. Creating and Using Mindmaps in the Classroom -- Wednesday, November 5

Early Warning Interventions for At-Risk Students Conference -- Wednesday, December 3-Friday, December 5
Location: San Diego, CA
There are many ways to categorize and approach at-risk students and assist them with their success in college. Generally, at-risk students are those who are not likely to graduate within six years. This can be due to many factors, such as not being academically prepared for college or not skilled to meet the academic demands of an institution. Statistically, students that come from an ethnic minority, have a lower socioeconomic status, are disabled or are conditionally accepted tend to be less likely to finish college. However, the weight of each of these variables that affect retention are institution-specific, so interventions must be institution-specific as well. This conference will discuss the variety of ways in which academically at-risk students can be identified and then lay out strategies for how interventions might be structured.
