EUGENE, Ore. — Lane Community College kicks off a week of events to honor those who have served our country beginning Monday, May 23. First on the agenda is a dedication ceremony at 10:45 a.m. in the Lane Veterans Services office, Room 223, Building 19, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene.
The ceremony will feature a small table, set for one, symbolizing missing members of our armed forces. Following the ceremony, the table will remain on display from Monday, May 23 through Thursday, May 26 outside the Lane Veterans Services office.
In addition to the table display, Lane Veterans Services will host a memorial panel exhibit on the plaza between Buildings 3 (Administration) and Buildings 4 and 5 (Health and Physical Education). That exhibit also will be on display from May 23 through 26.
All week long, students and community members are invited to bring the story of a serviceperson whose memory they wish to honor, along with a picture if desired, to the Veterans Services office. The stories and pictures should fit on one typewritten 8.5” x 11” sheet, and will be mounted on panels to be displayed in the memorial exhibit.
“We are very exited to host our first-ever event honoring military veterans who have served, and continue to serve, our country,” said Sharon Hainley, Veterans Services administrative specialist. “It is an excellent opportunity to express our thanks and honor those who are no longer with us.”
The week of events culminates with the premiere of “Forgotten Heroes,” a documentary featuring highlights from the Southern Valley Oregon Honor Flight in May 2014 where WWII military veterans visited their memorials in Washington, D.C.
The film will premiere from 3-5 p.m. on Thursday, May 26 in Building 4, Room 104. Michael Pungercar, director of the Southern Valley Oregon Honor Flight, will introduce the film and be available for questions afterwards.
Lane Veterans Services helps student veterans better understand their learning experience while assisting them with their transition to college. The office currently serves about 350 student veterans.
