EUGENE, Ore. — With one of the nation's most respected, largest and oldest cooperative education internship programs, Lane Community College honors one outstanding employer every year. At the July Board of Education meeting, Lane President Mary Spilde awarded the Cooperative Education Employer of the Year Award for 2014-2015 to the University of Oregon Information Services.
"We attribute the success of this internship program to the vision of UO Chief Information Officer Melissa Woo and her dedicated team, including HR Manager Jenna Rakes and Systems Director Micah Sardell," said President Spilde.
UO Information Services (IS) has accepted at least two interns from the Lane Community College Computer Information Technology program every term since becoming a co-op partner with Lane in 2013. Students are placed in the IS Windows, Linux, Storage and Virtualization, and Technology Help Desk unit.
"They give our students a superior internship experience in a large, complex IT enterprise environment," said LCC co-op coordinator Gerry Meenaghan.
The internships are paid and include free access to professional development trainings as well as resume review and interview training to help prepare students for employment after graduation. Outside of the workplace, IS staff make themselves available to talk with students or to speak at pre-internship and career preparation seminars. The University of Oregon has hired three LCC graduates since joining Lane's co-op employer network.
