Peace Makers Project
Peacemakers, a scholarship project of Lane's International Programs hopes to provide opportunities to help our community engage in a dialogue about peace in our world and better come to understand the many perspectives in areas of conflict. Peacemakers brought Yaara Tal, an Israeli, and Deema Yusuf, a Palestinian, to Lane for the academic years of 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. Yaara and Deema graduated from Lane in June 2015.
These 2 young women have been trained by Creativity for Peace (www.creativityforpeace.com) in the deep listening and honest dialogue that makes peace possible in our conflict torn world. Yaara and Deema were here to study and to teach. They took classes in Peace Studies and throughout our curriculum, and they will be educated fellow students, faculty, staff and community members about conflict and peace in the Middle East from their perspectives. While they were here, these 2 young women will spoke in classes at Lane and in public schools, religious centers, and other organizations in throughout our community. Deema and Yaara taught us much about cultural diversity and the possibility of bridging ethnic, national, and religious differences. Peace comes from the ability to see and feel the pain and joy of another as your own. As representatives of peacemaking in action, Deema and Yaara understand how to transform distrust, fear, and anger into compassion and love.
Through this scholarship project Lane Community College is furthering the creation of a peaceful world by educating a new generation of leaders who are capable of this high level of insight and empathy. We hope to raise funds to bring two more young leaders to Lane for the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 academic years.
