Solar Station and Multi-Building Solar Thermal

Project Status - Construction Complete

 

Solar Station Facts:

BUDGET

The college assigned 1% of the 2008 bond funds for renewable energy a total of $830,000. We started two renewable energy projects to use those funds:

  1. A solar electric and vehicle charging station project ($800,000 total. $100,000 from EWEB Greenpower grant and $700,000 from our bond funds)
  2. A multiple building solar thermal project. ($400,000 total. $270,000 from BLD 30 Health and Wellness 1.5% for solar budget and $130,000 bond funds)

Lane has received a preliminary certification for a pass through tax credit from the state department of energy for the solar thermal project and the Energy Trust. Also received was a preliminary certification from the state department of energy for the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Lane is building and are in the process of applying for a pass through tax credit from the state department of energy for the solar electric portion of the Solar Station project. Lane is looking for pass through tax partners (business or individuals with tax liabilities in the state of Oregon) for these projects. Project Coordinators have talked with the federal contractor for the I5 corridor electric vehicle charging station project concerning possible support with electric vehicle charging stations at the college in the future.

The preliminary estimate for the solar electric and vehicle charging station project two locations (35 charging stations and 80 KW of solar electricity) came in at $1.5 million dollars. This was due to the costs associated with building a structure that met the needs of the college and was adequate for Lane's high traffic patterns and usage.

LOCATIONS

The college choose to build one solar electric and vehicle charging station structure with approximately 40 KW of solar electricity and 18 covered charging stations on the west side of campus in parking lot B. This represents one station according to the original concept. The second charging station that will be located on the east side of campus in parking lot N will be built in the future as funding can be allocated.

The Multi-building solar thermal project has it's collectors on the roof of the Health and Wellness Center (Building 30). The balance of the project's systems connect the showers in Health, Physical Educaion and Athletics (Building 5), and Laundry (Building 7) located in the north tunnel system.

PURPOSE

The solar electric and vehicle charging station project is designed to be a multipurpose structure. It is designed to:

  1. Create a learning lab for students and the community.
  2. Offset the college's electricity usage upon installation and offset up to 11 electrical vehicles annually (based on traveling traveling approximately 600 miles per month).
  3. Provide electrical vehicle charging stations both for the new electric vehicles that are in production and for the college's existing fleet of electric service vehicles.
  4. Provide covered parking for alter-abled (ADA) as well as the general public.

Multi-Building Solar Thermal

The Multi-building solar thermal project is designed to will provide renewably generated hot water to users of the Health, Physical Education, and Athletics building (Building 5), Health & Wellness Center (Building 30), and Lane's laundry services (Building 7). This will reduce Lane's dependency on natural gas for heating hot water at the 30th Avenue campus by approximately $5,000 per year.
