LCC Tobacco Free Initiative
Sample scripts for talking with a student, employee, or visitor seen using tobacco products, on Lane Community College property, outside of the four designated smoking areas.
If you see a person smoking:
Hi. I noticed that you were smoking. I thought you might not have heard that tobacco use is not allowed in the core area of the LCC campus. I'm going to have to ask you to put out your cigarette until you reach one of the designated smoking areas out in the LCC parking lots. I should also mention that Nicotine Replacement Therapy is available for purchase in the bookstore and the LCC Health Clinic staff can also assist you in tobacco cessation efforts, if you are interested.
Thank you for your cooperation.
When there are questions ....
Q: Where am I allowed to smoke?
A: In order to provide a healthier environment, LCC no longer permits tobacco use on campus. If you wish to smoke, you will need to move to one of the four designated shelters located out in parking lots B,G, M and N. Thank you for observing our policy.
Q: Can I smoke in my car?
A: Your car is your personal property. But, we prefer that you don't smoke anywhere on campus, outside of the four designated areas located in parking lots B, G, M and N..
Q: What are you going to do if I smoke?
A: I understand that you are frustrated and that you want to smoke. But, I need to ask you to cooperate with our policy. If you must smoke, please move to one of the designated areas located in parking lots B,G, M and N.
Q: I am very stressed right now and really need to smoke. Can't you make an exception?
A: I know this is a stressful time for you and I would like to help. If you do not have the time to walk out to one of the designated smoking areas, you can purchase Nicotine Replacement Therapy in the LCC bookstore. Many people find NRT to be very helpful in the management of nicotine cravings.
We don't make exceptions to our tobacco free campus policy because it is important for the health and safety of everyone on campus. You can, however, walk out to one of the designated smoking areas to smoke and then come back.
