BioBonds

BioBonds

BioBonds are Learning Community Courses

BioBonds consist of:

  • BI 112 - Cell Biology for Health Occupations and
  • CH 112 - Chemistry for Health Occupations

BioBonds are co-requisite classes designed for specific health professions programs. There is no pre-requisite for BI 112. The pre-requisite for CH 112 is Math 52 or higher with a P grade of C- or better. Certain score levels of Lane's math placement test qualify to meet the pre-requisite. Review the course description on the class schedule for qualifying test scores or see the course descriptions below.

BioBonds are the pre-requisite for BI 231, Human Anatomy & Physiology (both with C- or better).

If you have taken previous biology and chemistry classes, please review your transcript, course description and syllabi for the classes you took and compare to the course descriptions listed below:

BI 112 Course Description: Corequisite: CH 112 Introduction to human cell structure, function, respiration and division. Includes genetic concepts of DNA replication, protein synthesis, genes and inheritance. Laboratory skills: use of microscopes, identification of cell structures. With CH 112, prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology BI 231.
4.000 Credit hours
30.000 TO 36.000 Lecture hours
30.000 TO 36.000 Lab hours

Levels: Credit
Schedule Types: Lecture plus Lec/Lab

CH 112 Course Description: Prerequisite: MTH 052 or above with grade of 'C-' or better or pass placement test. Corequisite: BI 112. Introduction to atoms, states of matter, bonding, energy, acid/base and buffer chemistry, organic and biological chemistry including lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, proteins, and metabolic pathways. Lecture/recitation and laboratory. With BI 112, the prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology BI 231.
4.000 Credit hours
40.000 TO 48.000 Lecture hours

Levels: Credit
Schedule Types: Lecture plus Lec/Lab

Learning Communities logo

Learning Communities Information:

BioBonds

This learning community combines Chemistry for Health Occupations
(CH 112) and Cell Biology for Health Occupations (BI 112) into a foundational course for students interested in pursuing the Anatomy and Physiology sequence at LCC. Through a variety of laboratory, group, lecture, and computer activities, students explore the life of the cell and the molecules that compose it, thus preparing students for the study of human organ systems that occurs in Human Anatomy and Physiology (BI 231, 232, 233). This learning community satisfies the prerequisite for Anatomy and Physiology I (BI 231).

Who should take the BioBonds Learning Community?

The BioBonds Learning Community is aimed at those students who are pursuing para-professional health programs such as nursing and dental hygiene. It is not acceptable as a pre-requisite for medical school admissions or many other professional health programs, e.g. pharmacy, physical therapy, dentistry. However, BioBonds may be useful as preparation for taking the 200-level biology and chemistry courses that do meet medical school admissions standards. At Lane, those sequences are:
BI 211-213 and CH 221-223.

Alternately, you may take a 100-level biology course such as BI 101, 102, or 103, or a 100-level chemistry course such as CH 150 or CH 104 to prepare for the 200-level sequences.

Registration Information for Summer 2016

These courses are designed for you to take together. Choose one pair and enter the CRNs in myLane at the same time. Once registered, you may not drop one class without dropping both classes.
