EUGENE, OR – The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present, bioDiversity, an exhibition featuring the works of local artist and Lane Community Art faculty, Kathleen Caprario.
Artist Statement:
The cut and stenciled mixed media paintings evolved from the question, "How am I shaped by my environment?" and seek to reconnect personal and cultural identities with the land. They reference and juxtapose the repetitive and abstracted forms observed in nature and the trope of wallpaper; landscape is frequently considered in Western societies as merely the backdrop against which human activity occurs that alters and consumes its natural resources. In this way, it is similar to wallpaper, an important but often overlooked environmental influence.
The cut-outs identify organic silhouettes as well as environmental boundaries with the absence within those areas questioning historic appropriation, ownership and use. Overlaid are black and white, rhythmic lines that track the simultaneity of actions in the environment experienced including the flight of birds, the activity of insects and my own movements through the land.
I wish to acknowledge, with gratitude, an artist residency at the PLAYA Foundation, Summer Lake OR and the receipt of a Ford Family Foundation Mid-Career Artist Residency Award. This work is the result—Thank you.
The show runs from October 17th to November 10th. There will be a lecture with fellow artist, JS Bird on Thursday, October 20th 3:00 pm with a reception immediately following.
The galleries are located in building 11 on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. There is no charge for admission. The Art and Applied Design Department phone number is (541) 463-5409.
