LCC Public Safety offers personal safety classes, April 28

image of instructor and participantsEUGENE, Ore. — Lane Community College Public Safety will offer its next Sexual Assault Awareness/Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness and Basic Self Defense class on Thursday, April 28 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Building 5, Room 125, at Lane main campus, 4000 East 30th Avenue, Eugene.

Sexual Assault Awareness Training
This class is open to the entire college community as well as the general public. During this one-hour portion of the class, which will be instructed by Sergeant Lisa Rupp, attendees will be given instruction on how to prevent sexual assaults and harassment; what to do and not do if you are sexually assaulted; and how and where to report incidents. This class is from 9-10 a.m.

Dating And Domestic Violence Awareness
The Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness presentation was put together with the goal of helping people out of abusive relationships, recognizing abusive relationships (whether its their own relationship or a friends/family). The class will provide information on warning signs of abuse, what abuse is, making a plan to get away safely, resources around the college and the community (both emergency and legal). Also included will be information about restraining orders and stalking orders, and handouts on resources and safety planning. This class is from 10-11 a.m.

Basic Self-Defense Training (Rape Aggression Defense)
This class is open to the entire college community as well as the general public.
During the three-hour portion of the class, which will be instructed by Corporal Ryan Sager, Sergeant Jacob Ryker, and Officer Robin Williams; attendees will be led through a series of warm up exercises to help loosen up and prevent injury. Participants will be instructed on proper methods to perform a variety of strikes and escape techniques. Participants will be monitored as they practice their new skills on strike bags. This class is from 11-2pm

New this year is a redman suit which will allow participants to get hands on self defense and rape aggression defense training. Cpl. Sager will wear the suit and attendees will be able to perform strikes and kicks on him at full force without hurting him.

In addition to hands-on exercises, participants will learn about personal safety in the parking lots, including situational awareness, walking confidently and with head held high, and having keys in hand, ready to open a car door or be used to protect oneself.
