EUGENE, Ore. - Lane Community College invites the public to officially celebrate the opening of its transformed Center Building on main campus on Wednesday, January 27 from 12-1 p.m. A half-hour ceremony will be followed by tours. Refreshments will be provided.
Speakers will include President Mary Spilde, Board of Education Chair Tony McCown, Lane Foundation President Don Rainer, ASLCC President Ashley Jackson, and Tutoring Services Coordinator Liz Coleman.
The Center Building is located at the heart of main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue in Eugene. It is one of the oldest buildings at Lane. An extensive renovation began in June 2014 and opened to students fall 2015, three months ahead of schedule, apart from a punch list.
This transformative project was affectionately called the Center for Learning and Student Success, or CLASS. The project has remade the center of campus into a vibrant leaning commons which will increase student engagement, shown by research to help students complete their education. Most Lane graduates stay in the community and contribute to the local economic vitality.
Features of the project include a sweeping new plaza on the formerly dark west side of the building, a new first-floor food court, a renovated Renaissance Room demonstration restaurant and kitchen for culinary and hospitality students, and a new Titan Store bookstore.
The second floor offers numerous group study areas, a student help desk tech center, the library, a multimedia lab, a center for student engagement housing student clubs and organizations, a print center, and the Robert L. Ackerman Tutor Central study center. The third floor features a quiet study area, additional group study rooms, a testing center, and the second floor of the library.
The CLASS project remodeled 97,938 square feet on the first through third floors and added 7,716 square feet for the new Titan Store. The budget was $35 million funded in part by Lane’s $83 million bond approved by voters in 2008, and by private gifts through the LCC Foundation.
