LCC to test rooftop alarm system Dec. 30

sound mapEUGENE, Ore.— Lane Community College will test and calibrate a new rooftop emergency alarm system on Wednesday, December 30 between 1 and 4 p.m. It will be an alarm tone followed by a voice message.

The alarm will be audible in the Bloomberg and Oakhill areas adjacent to campus. It is estimated to be about 65 decibels (dB) in the Bloomberg Road neighborhood, about 92 dB at Oak Hill School, and about 101 dB at the source. By comparison, a typical lawnmower or hand drill emits about 90 to 93 dBs. According to OSHA, 101 dB is the limit for safe exposure for up to 1.5 continuous hours.

The alarm will be installed on the top of the Center Building in the middle of main campus. The alarm will augment the college’s ability to issue emergency communications and warnings.
