EUGENE, Ore. - Computers are everywhere, but fewer schools teach computer science than 10 years ago. Girls and minorities are severely underrepresented. The national Hour of Code project emerged last year to change all that, and this year, local youth can get hands-on coding experience at the Eugene Region CoderDojo Hour of Code event at the LCC Downtown Campus from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11.
The event will offer kids a chance to play with Finches or build a game with SCRATCH, and several other coding activities.
The Hour of Code, organized by the nonprofit Code.org with more than 100 partners including Lane, shows that today’s youth are ready to learn critical skills for 21st century success, says Shareen Vogel, local event coordinator. The event is free and no experience is required.

The Downtown Campus is located at 101 W. 10th St. Avenue in Eugene.
