EUGENE, Ore — The nation's highest award for biology teaching at two-year colleges will be presented to Stacey Kiser of Lane Community College.
Kiser will accept the National Biology Teacher of the Year award at the National Association of Biology Teachers conference in Providence, Rhode Island on November 11-14.
"Stacey takes complex and often difficult topics and makes them fun and exciting for students. She empowers students to explore, learn and grow," said Lane Community College President Mary Spilde. "We are very proud to have her receive this national recognition."
"Students regularly praise Stacey for her skill in the classroom and for her role as a mentor," said Interim Science Division Dean Paul Ruscher. "It's great seeing so many of her students excited about science."
"My students come to class with different life experiences, but have a common desire to learn. My goal is to help them explore the world of living organisms and have those great experiences that keep them asking questions and thinking about the world from a scientific perspective," said Kiser. "As educators, we succeed when our students thrive. It is an honor to accept this award from the National Association of Biology Teachers, and to have the support of so many students and colleagues in the field."
In addition to her work in the classroom, Kiser has been a leader in reforming biology curriculum and incorporating the best scientific and teaching practices in the classroom. This summer, Stacey helped Lane win a $250,000 two-year grant from the prestigious National Science Foundation to infuse research experience into non-majors biology and earth and environmental science courses with a goal of sharing materials with other community colleges across the nation.
Kiser is a past president of the National Association of Biology Teachers. She has a bachelor of science in zoology from Oregon State University and a master of science in biology from the University of Oregon.
