Eugene, Ore. – Martin McDonagh has been called "the Quentin Tarantino of the theatre." The Student Production Association of Lane is proud to open their season with his dark comedy The Pillowman in the intimate Blue Door theatre on Lane's campus.
Katurian, a writer in a totalitarian state, is interrogated about his short stories, the content of which are eerily similar to a series of murders in the area. With both the writer and his brother held captive, the police work to ferret out the truth--but is that what they're really after? Martin McDonagh's brutal dark comedy examines the nature of fairy tales, family, and consequences. Influenced by the Brothers Grimm, Franz Kafka, and Antonin Artaud, The Pillowman is a dark, twisty, and unforgettable masterpiece from one of Ireland's most celebrated contemporary writers.
Tara Wibrew, Associate Producer at Oregon Contemporary Theatre and former SPA board president, is pleased to return to Lane to direct. According to Wibrew, "We're raised on two-dimensional stories of right and wrong, good and evil. And that kind of storytelling continues in plenty of movies, books, television--even the news. The Pillowman explores how life--and art--is multifaceted and multidimensional. As soon as we draw a line between black and white, we discover the spectrum of gray between."
The cast consists of Lane Theatre majors: Taylor Freeman, Aaron Smart, David Arnold, Cash McAllister, Dakota Berman, Tyra Potter, John Kerns, and Rebecca Blanchard. Set design is by Amy Dunn, Master Carpenter at Oregon Contemporary Theatre. Lighting Design is by Lane's Technical Director James McConkey.
Tickets for The Pillowman are $5.00 for students and seniors and $10.00 for the general public. All profits from all SPA presentations go directly to pay for tuition for theatre students at Lane.
