The "flying people" at the Eugene Airport are headed back out on vacation, but they will remain on public display at a new venue.
Construction work will soon impact a wall on the A-concourse where three panels of the "Flight Patterns" work of art is displayed. As a result, the full work of art will be loaned to and displayed at the David Joyce Gallery at Lane Community College.
The piece is a work by the late Eugene artist and Lane Community College instructor David Joyce. It was installed at the Eugene Airport in 1989 and refurbished in 2012. Staff with the City of Eugene Cultural Services Division, the Eugene Airport, and the David Joyce Gallery at Lane have been working on a solution to protect the art during construction.
"Instead of boxing up and storing the art for the remainder of the construction project, LCC has provided us with a great opportunity," said AIC Assistant Airport Director Cathryn Stephens, AAE. "You won't need to go through a security checkpoint to see it."
"It's like the flying people are visiting the home folks for a while," said Susan Detroy, David Joyce Gallery Director. "We hope that hosting the airport's collection will give everyone a chance to view David's piece and will introduce more of the community to the unique exhibits offered each term at the CENTER for Meeting and Learning."
This fall's exhibit, "Taking Flight: A Visual Voyage, 2015-16," includes the work of Northwest artists including Demetra Kalams, AnneTeigen, Jeffery Bird, and Patty McNutt as well as the gallery's permanent display of David Joyce's artwork. "Taking Flight" is open until January 8.
Once construction is complete the wall configuration on the upper level concourse will be very different and future display of this work will need additional consideration. No final decisions have been made.
The terminal expansion project is currently at about the half-way complete mark. The construction is focused on several areas in the terminal building including the security screening checkpoint, B-gate hold room, A-gate concourse and the baggage claim area, with a goal of easing congestion and improving functionality for passengers. Project completion and commissioning is targeted for summer 2016.
