EUGENE, Ore. - Bob Ackerman won a prolonged standing ovation from the Lane Community College Board of Education and the audience at the board's June meeting. Ackerman is retiring from the board after four terms reaching back 50 years to his election to Lane's first board in 1965 and three more successful elections in 1999, 2007 and 2011.
Ackerman also served in the Oregon House of Representatives for three terms where he was an active member of the community college caucus. Locally, he was a highly respected and well known civil rights attorney and diversity advocate.
The board named the college's tutoring center in his honor, as the Robert L. Ackerman Tutor Central, and held a reception to present a video describing the highlights of Ackerman's career.
Lane Archives features an oral history with Ackerman who bucked hay bales in 1957 on the property that became main campus.
Lane is an AA/EEO/Veterans/Disabilities Employer
