EUGENE, Ore.— Lane Community College art student Joslyn Jones of Eugene has won first place in the national Student Art Competition sponsored annually by the League for Innovation in the Community College.
She won for her sculpture "Broken Bones" created in a foundry class taught by Lane instructor Andreas Salzman and later assembled it for competition in an independent study class with Lane instructor Lee Imonen.
In her statement for the piece, Jones wrote, "I find the majority of my inspiration through the pain in my life. When it comes to my art I look for the 'shock factor.' I want people to be drawn to my art and unable to look away because of the emotion that it can bring over someone. I want the viewer and allow them self to feel their own life though the work."
Jones is in her second year at Lane. Before Lane, she completed two years at Chico State University. She would someday like to own her own foundry.
The competition included 85 works of art submitted by students at the League's 17 board member colleges. Jurors were Fred Herbst, professor of art at Corning Community College in New York; Rick Love, assistant professor of art and design at the University of Northwestern-St Paul; and Rob Beishline, professor of art and department chair for visual and performing arts and humanities at Whatcom Community College in Bellingham, WA. The 2014-15 competition was hosted by Lane Community College and coordinated by studio and media arts instructor Jennifer Salzman.
Each year, the League for Innovation invites board member colleges to participate in its annual student art competition. National winners receive cash prizes for first, second, third, and juror's choice awards. All entries are published in a showcase catalog that is distributed to board member colleges in the fall.
