Eugene, Ore. – Student Production Association of Lane Community College presents the one-man show "Beyond Words" featuring Broadway actor Bill Bowers on Saturday May 30 at 7:00 pm. Mr. Bowers will also be teaching a "movement for the actor" workshop on Wednesday May 27 from 7:00-9:00 pm. The workshop is free and open to the public!
One the most acclaimed multi-disciplinary artists in America today, Bill Bowers employs an eloquent mixture of music, monologues, and mime in his on-going investigation of the silence surrounding the enigmatic matters of gender in our culture today. Often compared to Chaplin and Keaton, he has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, and Asia.
For "Beyond Words," Bowers draws his characters from life and moves beyond mere anecdotes to create a vibrant and visual poetry. With both audacity and compassion, he explores how culture informs gender, what it means to be a male, and the messages we receive on our way to becoming men. "Beyond Words" is an evening of honestly earned laughter linked to surprisingly powerful emotions; words, movement, and mime are yoked to remarkably striking effect. He can call himself a mime, but, in truth, Bill Bowers is in a category all by himself.
The New York Times has called "Beyond Words," "Fascinating. Affecting. Engaging to the eye and ear." The Dallas Arts Examiner says, "'Beyond Words' is one of the most poignant, fresh, absorbing, empathic, hilarious, and ingenious pieces I've ever seen. Bowers transforms the stage into a realm of revelation and transfiguring." The New York Post says: "He presents a portrait of small-town America filtered through his own experiences that's both moving and funny. Bowers effortlessly brings us to laughter and tears, often at the same time."
