LCC Public Safety offers free personal defense classes, Feb. 5

EUGENE, Ore.— Lane Community College Public Safety will offer Sexual Assault Awareness/Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness, and Basic Self Defense classes on Thursday, February 5 from 12-5 p.m. at the Lane Downtown Academic Building, Room 105, 101 West 10th Ave. in Eugene. These free trainings are open to the college community and the general public.

Personal defense training"These are many reasons people will benefit from these trainings, especially women," says training instructor and Officer Valeri Miller. "For instance, one in four women in the United States will be victims of domestic violence, and one in five will report physical or sexual abuse from a dating partner." Miller adds that the trainings are relevant for anyone concerned about personal safety.

The workshops:

Sexual Assault Awareness Training and Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness
12-2 p.m.
The Sexual Assault Awareness portion of this training will explain how to prevent sexual assaults and harassment; what to do and not do if sexually assaulted; and how and where to report incidents.
The Dating and Domestic Violence Awareness, developed and offered for the first time, is designed to help people leave abusive relationships and recognize abusive relationships whether their own or that of a friend or family member. Information will include the warning signs of abuse, what abuse is, making a plan to get away safely, and resources available at Lane and in the community, including emergency and legal resources. Information about restraining orders and stalking orders also will be provided, plus handouts on resources and safety planning.
Instructors are Public Safety Sergeant Lisa Rupp and Officer Valeri Miller.

Basic Self-Defense Training
2:30-5 p.m.
During this training, attendees will be led through a series of warm up exercises to help loosen up and prevent injury. Participants will be instructed on proper methods to perform a variety of strikes and escape techniques. Participants will be monitored as they practice their new skills on strike bags.
In addition to hands-on exercises, participants will learn about personal safety in parking lots, including situational awareness, walking confidently and with head held high, and having keys in hand, ready to open a car door or to be used to protect oneself.
Instructors are Public Safety Officer Ryan Sager and Sergeant Lisa Rupp.

To register in advance, call Lane Community College Public Safety at (541) 463-5558. Drop-ins are welcome the day of the training but space is limited to 40 participants.
