EUGENE, Ore.— Local middle and high school students will again participate in the largest coding event in history as part of the Hour of Code occurring across the country on Dec. 11 and 13. This regional event in its second year will teach computer coding skills as part of Computer Science Education Week. Locally, Lane Community College will host Hour of Code events at the Downtown Campus, 101 W.10th Ave. in Eugene, Room 104, Thursday, Dec. 11, 3:30 – 5:50 p.m. and Room 220, Saturday, Dec. 13, 12 p.m. – 2 p.m.
Lane will provide computers; participants may also bring their own laptops.
Participants are required to register online.
According to the professional nonprofit organization Computing the Core, while computers are an integral part of society, fewer schools teach computer science than 10 years ago. The good news is that a regional partnership of LCC, 4J, City of Eugene, and U of O are working with the local technology industry to change this. Last year, Hour of Code made history in our region with more than 200 participants, contributing to the 15 million student participants nationally that used computer science in one week.
Students should bring a willingness to learn and be ready to code. They can get started at the Hour of Code website.
Hour of Code is co-sponsored locally by CodeChops.
