EUGENE, ORE. -The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to present "Narratives of China", featuring work by Portland based artist, John Sinclair.
John Sinclair is a Pacific Northwest artist whose works consists of multiple influences and that become visual conversations through the mediums of drawing and painting.
Artist Statement:
"Combining photographic reference, memory, imagination, and a rigorous use of rendering, my drawings and paintings present a fascination with the formal concerns of two dimensional art which has preoccupied figurative artists for centuries--conjuring from a flat surface illusions of three dimensional life, of light, shade, space, form, emotion and perhaps even a narrative. Thematically, my work reflects a lifelong passion for Asian culture and cuisine--a sort of whimsical armature on which everything else is layered.
While these concerns are front and center in my work, there always lurks an ironic twist, something comic or a little off kilter, overturning the viewers' expectations. My artistic heroes are as diverse as Da Vinci, Caravaggio, Eakins, Hammershoi, Dali, Close, Wyeth and Desiderio, all of whom are linked by a preoccupation with the illusion of light and form, yet never neglecting the imagination and the fluid subtext of the subconscious."
The show runs from October 27 to November 13 in the Main Gallery. There will be an artist talk/question and answer on Tuesday, November 4 at 4:30 pm with a reception immediately following. The gallery is located in building 11 on the main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue. There is no charge for admission. The Art and Applied Design Department phone number is 541-463-5409.
