EUGENE, Ore. - It was a dark and icy night on October 19, 1964 when voters lined up at the polls and founded Lane Community College with a 5-to-1 margin of support in a special election. Since then, thousands of students have achieved their dreams at Lane and the college ranks as one of the nation's best.
To honor 50 years of student success, Lane will hold a community celebration on Wednesday, Oct. 15 on main campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave. in Eugene. There will be tours and open houses beginning at 1 p.m., and the official ceremony begins at 4 p.m. in the Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19.
The event will include remarks by Governor Kitzhaber, the introduction of five Distinguished Alumni—one from each decade—and refreshments including Titan Power Pale Ale brewed by Ninkasi in honor of Lane's 50th anniversary. Everyone's invited to attend and celebrate their connection to Lane's past, present and future.
A Florence celebration of Lane's 50th will be held at the LCC Florence Center at 3149 Oak St., on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m., prior to the Board of Education's annual meeting in Florence.
Lane's 50th Anniversary website at www.lanecc.edu/50 offers more event information, a timeline with historic photos, fun facts, and stories posted by past and present students, employees and other members of the Lane community.
