Classes fill a gap left by expired grant for the HEP program at the UO
EUGENE, Ore. - In response to student and community partner requests, Lane Community College is offering two Spanish GED classes this fall, one in Springfield and one in Eugene.
A federal grant supporting the long-running and well-respected High School Equivalency Program (HEP) at University of Oregon was not renewed for 2014-15, leaving a gap in services for Spanish speaking students wishing to obtain a certificate of General Education Development (GED). HEP provided migrant workers and the children of migrant workers an opportunity to earn their GED while also receiving career counseling and other support services. UO representatives have created a working group to investigate options for future HEP funding, perhaps with a new model of services.
To help fill in the need, Lane will offer an evening class from 6:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Lane's Downtown Campus, 101 W. 10th Avenue in Eugene. GED classes at the Downtown Campus are free and students pay a $27 transportation fee, which provides an LTD bus pass for the term.
Thanks to a partnership with Springfield School District, Lane's Adult Basic and Secondary Education Department will offer a class from 6:15 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at Springfield High School, 875 7th Street, Springfield, in room 330. The class and child care in Springfield are offered at no cost and are part of Springfield's 21st Century Community Learning Center after-school programming.
Experienced Lane instructor Rafael Arias will teach both Spanish GED classes.
Those interested in either class can come the first night (Monday, Sept. 29 in Springfield or Tuesday, Sept 30 in Eugene) to register. Fall classes run from Sept. 29 to Dec. 11.
Students whose skill level may make it difficult for them to study at GED level can work with the nonprofit Downtown Languages at 221 B. St. in Springfield to build their skills before entering the GED class. Call 541-686-8483 for more information.
Lane ABSE also offers GED classes in English in Eugene, Springfield, Junction City, Cottage Grove and Florence.
