Tibetan Monks build sand mandala at LCC Downtown Campus, ongoing through June 12

Mandala sand paintingThe renowned monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery are creating a community sand mandala in the Lane Community College Downtown Center for Meeting and Learning, 101 W. 10th Ave., Eugene, OR.

The creation continues through Thursday, June 12 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. The work began June 7 and will close with a ceremony on Thursday, June 12 at 6 p.m.

The magnificent Buddhist mandala sand paintings are "delicately created grain by grain to generate energies for global healing."

Lane is partnering with the Palmo Center for Peace and Education to sponsor this event. For more information contact Donna Koechig, 5307, koechigd@lanecc.edu.

In addition, the Drepung Loseling monks will perform at the Hult Center in downtown Eugene on Friday, June 13.

The Drepung Loseling monks are renowned for their unique singing and their sellout performances in Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center received national acclaim. They use traditional instruments such as 10-foot long dung-chen horns, drums, bells, cymbals and gyaling trumpets.

Endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, their tour has three basic purposes: to make a contribution to world peace and healing; to generate a greater awareness of the endangered Tibetan civilization; and to raise support for the Tibetan refugee community in India.
