EUGENE, Ore.— For the first time ever, the Lane Community College Foundation Board awarded the President's Circle Award for Philanthropy to an individual, a corporation, and a foundation, at the President's Circle reception held May 22.
The reception is held annually to honor those who have made annual and lifetime giving commitments to the Lane Community College Foundation. The President's Circle Award for Philanthropy recognizes ongoing financial support of the Lane Community College Foundation, advocacy for Lane's mission through leadership or volunteer service, and those who encourage philanthropy throughout the community.
• President's Circle Award for Philanthropy–Individual was awarded to Mrs. Jane King. After retirement and moving to Eugene in 1984, a lifelong appreciation of education brought Jane King to Lane Community College. Jane's first class at LCC was poetry, followed by classes in philosophy, history, writing and acting. Mrs. King has been a donor to the Lane Community College Foundation since 1989 and a member of President's Circle since 1992. Mrs. King has been active with programs at LCC including Reading Together, Friends of Theatre, and the Dance Program.
• President's Circle Award for Philanthropy–Corporation was awarded to The Register-Guard. Since 1927, the Eugene Register-Guard has been the community's paper. Today, The Register-Guard remains true to its editorial-page statement of purpose, "A Newspaper is a Citizen of Its Community." The family-run paper has been a member of the Lane Community College Foundation President's Circle since 1979. The Register-Guard is a sponsor of the Foundation's annual Harvest Dinner, provided sponsorship of scholarships at LCC, and with Tony Baker's leadership led a community effort to build the Health Professions Building to train nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists and physical therapy assistants.
• President's Circle Award for Philanthropy–Foundation was awarded to The Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund. Weyerhaeuser has nearly a 40-year relationship of philanthropy with the Lane Community College Foundation. Weyerhaeuser support of Lane Community College includes donations of computers and printers, a grant for summer musicals, support of environmental education programs and multiple scholarships for business, advanced technology department and diversity. The Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund is active in 16 states and four Canadian providences.
"All three of our honorees are catalysts for student success at Lane Community College and ultimately for the entire community," said Wendy Jett, Director of Lane Community College Foundation.
