Prescription Drug Take-Back Day April 26 at LCC main campus, and downtown

Lane Community College Public Safety Chief with Take-Back Day collection binsEUGENE, Ore. — Do something positive about the expired or unwanted medications in your home—bring them to the eighth national Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday, April 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at two Lane Community College locations:

Center for Meeting and Learning, Building 19, Main Campus, 4000 E. 30th Ave., Eugene
Downtown Center, 101 W. 10th Ave., Eugene

The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Just drive up and drop off your unwanted items into the collection bins that will be placed at each location. Any medication except liquids or sharps can be dropped off. Over-the-counter and veterinary medications are acceptable.

Lane Public Safety is again partnering with the Drug Enforcement Administration on this initiative to keep potentially dangerous, expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs out of the waste stream or the wrong hands. The DEA safely incinerates the collected items.

Counting all seven previous events nationwide, the DEA and its partners have collected more than 3.4 million pounds of medications.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
