EUGENE, OR – The Lane Community College Art Gallery is proud to VIBRANT MATTER, SCULPTURE IN GLASS, by Hawaiian artist Jonathan Swanz.
Jonathan Swanz is a recent MFA graduate from the University of Hawaii and currently teaches at the University. His specialty is glass sculpture with a background in both sculpture and ceramics. In his most recent work, he has begun to work with dance and performance as part of his installation work.
"I believe glass to be the most convincingly alive of fine art materials. My artistic practice utilizes the living qualities of hot glass as an investigative entry into the dynamic material nature of humanity. I use non-traditional glass techniques informed by social observation to awaken the human relationship with the materiality of the body, a body recognized as part of a living energy system constantly undergoing changes of state- physically, emotionally, energetically, socially, and spiritually. I acknowledge that materials demonstrate social behaviors- attraction and repulsion, path of least resistance, cause and effect, fatigue under pressure, inertia- and believe they offer observational learning opportunities into the social-materiality of humans. I create technical parameters in the studio that emulate the socio-material organization of humans resulting in expressive abstract sculptures and installations. I believe the power of creative acts involving materials, especially the energetically intensive and dynamic working of hot glass, are capable of providing transformative insight into the human experience."
