EUGENE, Ore.— Lane Community College students will present a Shakespeare Showcase on March 15 (the Ides of March). There will be one performance at 7:00 P.M. in the Blue Door Theatre on the main campus.
The Student Productions Association presents the Showcase, which is the final project for students in the Theatre Department's ten-week Acting Shakespeare class.
The date March 15 was forever marked by the assassination of Julius Caesar. Caesar will be lamented by his friend Marc Antony - and other Shakespearean characters will celebrate, fight, or fall in love - in an intimate evening of scenes.
The program includes scenes from Othello, Merchant of Venice, Henry V, King Lear, As You Like It, Henry VIII, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and The Tempest.
Professional musicians Lynne Coats and Barrett Codieck will provide interludes, and Bill Woolum will narrate.
The Showcase is an opportunity for students to experiment with style – for example, one scene will be Western, but most are typically Elizabethan.
The students practice diligently, to convey the meaning and emotion in Shakespeare's poetic language. Director Judith "Sparky" Roberts says, "Even with Shakespeare's archaic language, it's still amazing how relevant his plays are today - the characters, their relationships, and the situations."
Audience is limited to age 10 and older. The show is free.
