EUGENE, Ore. — Recent national research shows that new student information sessions and mandatory advising are highly effective ways of improving student success. Lane Community College began requiring new student information sessions last fall, and this spring the college will implement mandatory advising.
"Together, these practices give students powerful and timely tools to help them move toward their goals," says Kerry Levett, Executive Dean of Student Affairs.
"One of our challenges with any new student success practice is getting the word out to our prospective students," adds Levett. "We are using all of our technology tools to reach students but we also need word-of-mouth help," including e-mail, Facebook, and web sites such as Steps to Enroll.
It takes about 10 days to complete the Steps to Enroll, including the new student information sessions and mandatory academic advising; the financial aid process can take longer.
"It is vital that new credit students complete their information and advising sessions by the Friday before the start of the term, or they will need to postpone registration until the next term," cautions Levett.
People who enroll late are less likely to continue their education, and more likely to incur debt, according to research. Lane offers several options to help students enroll on time. First-time, new credit students can attend in-person advising sessions on main campus every Friday from the seventh week through the 11th week of the term. Spring term advising sessions begin Friday, March 7 at 8:30 a.m. and run through Friday, March 28. At Lane's outreach centers, students can meet with an advisor locally. Online advising also is available. Students with prior college credits can schedule a one-on-one session with an advisor or counselor to develop an effective academic plan.
