The African American Rites of Passage Summer Academy is a program designed for the cultural, academic and social enrichment of African American youth in Lane County.  Students enrolled in the program range between 12 and 18 years of age.  These students participate in a number of structured courses throughout the three-week program.   Courses are taught in African American History and Literature, Leadership, Empowerment and Life Skills Training.  In addition to daily course work, students engage a two-day workshop seminar at the University of Oregon.  Workshop topics include Substance Abuse and Gender Issues.

Each student is responsible for an individual capstone project designed to aggregate their learning experience in the program.  All students participate in a group Capstone project which is reflective of their collective learning experience.  This summer 13 students from local area high schools and middle schools will be honored and celebrated for their accomplishments.

The public is welcome to attend the event honoring these remarkable students.
