Cottage Grove area GED grads to celebrate; others face deadline to complete testing

EUGENE, OR - Lane Community College at Cottage Grove will hold a graduation ceremony for its GED (General Equivalency Development) certificate completers on Friday, June 14 at 6 p.m. at the campus located at 1275 S. River Road. About 15 students will participate out of the 25 who will complete their GEDs this year.

Lane offers classes at multiple locations, including Cottage Grove, to help students prepare for the GED. The GED is a series of five tests covering math, reading, writing, science and social studies. A GED or high school diploma is required to qualify for federal financial aid.

The GED test is changing in January to a new version. Those who have already started testing need to finish by December or they will have to start over in January and pay new, higher fees. In addition, the test will be computer-based, instead of the current paper-and-pencil version.

October 11 is the last date students may begin the current GED test series. December 6 is the last date for testing under this series.

About 800 people throughout Lane County who started GED testing at Lane have not completed, says instructor Gail Hemsoth. They are a highly mobile population, age 16 and older.

Lane wants to offer GED classes in Cottage Grove this summer, but needs funding, and is working with the Lane Community College Foundation to find donations.
