Eugene, OR - The 200-year old traditional Balinese Legong dance is brought to life in Eugene February 16 at 1:50 pm at the Asian Celebration at the Lane County fairgrounds. Rarely performed even in Bali, Bonnie Simoa and her dancers from Lane Community College perform this mesmerizing dance that emerged in the palaces of Balinese royalty. Due to its length and complexity, few dancers have the stamina and concentration required for this forty-minute dance. Complex and enchanting, the audience will experience why the dance is described as the "epitome of femininity and grace."
Gorgeous in glittery gold and jeweled detailed, and headdresses adorned with flowers, the dancers move with remarkable precision while they embody bold and ancient characters. For Bali lovers, or those who dream of traveling there, this performance is not to be missed. Authentic and masterfully performed, the dancers transmit the technique and style with a level of mastery that promises to invoke the spirit of Bali in Eugene.
Bonnie Simoa was born and raised in California. She received her Master of Fine Arts in Choreography and Performance from Mills College. In 1990-1996, she directed the Bonnie Simoa Dance Company, which performed nationally and in Germany and Indonesia. She has performed with Walter Kennedy, the Christopher Watson Dance Company, the Ellen Webb Dance Company, the Ellen Bromberg Dance Ensemble, and the Mills Repertory Company. Bonnie has spent the past sixteen years traveling to Bali to study dance and culture with master teachers including the Legong, Teruna Jaya, Rejang Dewa, Rejang Sutri and Gambuh. Bonnie continues to create and perform contemporary dances, is a Certified Continuum Movement Teacher, and directs the Lane Dance Program.
