David Joyce Gallery opens the 2012-13 season with "Taste and Flavor: Spicy" Artists' reception set for October 11

EUGENE, Ore. - The David Joyce Gallery located in the Center for Meeting and Learning at Lane Community College has opened its first exhibit of the 2012-13 academic year titled, "Taste and Flavor: Spicy." "Spicy" features 11 Oregon artists including Lane faculty and staff Dan Welton, Joe McCully, and Kathryn Torvik; Lane art student Lorena Cornell; and artists Robin Cushman, David Putzier, Ellen Hamill, JoEllen Gregori Waldvogel, Kat Sloma, Anne McRae, and Erin Kitselman. Exhibit designer is local artist and art consultant Susan Detroy.Burst of Flavor by Kat Soma

The gallery themes this year are based on concepts of taste and flavor –hot, piquant, prickly, dazzling. "Spicy" is featured this fall. What does spicy mean to our exhibit artists? Images of peppers, onions, spices, pickling, fire, and Asian cuisine along with visions of smoldering and romantic passion, hot and bright colors, and a bit of risqué ambiance to ignite the senses.

The gallery also is showcasing a new collection of the eclectic, photographic cutout fragments of artist David Joyce (1946-2003) for whom the gallery is named. Joyce taught at Lane for 25 years and is best known in the community for his monumental flying people mural "Flight Patterns" at the Eugene Airport, which was recently re-touched. Featured this fall are additional "flying people," and a large cutout of famed University of Oregon School of Journalism faculty/photographer Bernard Freemesser (1926-1977).

"Taste and Flavor: Spicy" runs from Wednesday, August 29 through Friday, December 21, Mondays through Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All art is for sale with 25 percent of the proceeds supporting the David Joyce Gallery.

An artists' reception will be held Thursday, October 11 from 5-6:30 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres prepared and served by the students in the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program.
