Eugene, OR - The Term's End Shakespeare Showcase will be held Saturday, August 11, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Blue Door Theatre, building 6, Lane Community College main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene.
The quarterly Showcase is produced by the Student Productions Association (SPA), which also sponsored the building of the set, a replica of London's Globe stage, constructed by Scott Williams.
The program is filled with folly and passions. The pieces are short, and from various plays, so the mood keeps shifting. "It's a heady and visceral mix," says director Judith "Sparky" Roberts.
Audience members are often surprised to hear age-old, commonly used expressions, spoken in their original context. The actors practice making Elizabethan English comprehensible, so that even people who are new to Shakespeare are swept in by the characters, the stories, and the playwright's insights.
Guest artists will include musician Janet Naylor, Barbie Wu, and professional actor Joe Cronin, who also assists with coaching the actors.
The Showcase, now entering its 22nd year, is the final project for Acting Shakespeare students, and also features actors from the community.
The current program includes scenes from Hamlet, King Lear, Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, Othello, Julius Caesar, The Taming of the Shrew, Richard III, A Midsummer Night's Dream, All's Well That Ends Well, As You Like It, Richard III, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and Merry Wives of Windsor.
Audience members must be 10 years or older to be admitted. Seating is open. Donations are welcome to support the continuing efforts of SPA. For more information call the Student Productions office at (541) 463-5761 or email Gabriel Dresser at proproductions06@gmail.com
