EUGENE, OR - The 16th Annual African American Rites of Passage Summer Academy at Lane Community College will hold its Capstone Graduation ceremonies on Tuesday, July 17 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Longhouse, main campus, 4000 E. 30th Avenue, Eugene.
The ceremonies celebrate the work, learning of achievement of the 19 young men and women enrolled in this year's academy.
Rites of Passage is designed to inform and inspire high school and middle school students of color in Lane County. Students representing four racial/ethnic groups are immersed in a five-week summer program focusing on their cultural history, literature, folklore, and traditions. These programs are based in an academic framework that promotes positive self-image and self-esteem. The four affinity-based programs include:
African American Rites of Passage,Pan Asian American Rites of Passage,Umista Native American Rites of Passage, andPuertas Abiertas Latino/Latina Rites of Passage.
The program was established in 1996 by Greg Evans with the African American academy and has received national attention.
